Nebraska Red Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 if are you talking about right now. Guardiola has to be right up there, his team has won everything in the past year. after him, the rest are only so so at the moment. I would find it hard to put Rafa on any list of best managers at the moment.
Crazy Horse Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 GuardiolaMourinhoFerguson One to watch - I'm liking the cut of Owen Coyle's jib.
Stevie H Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 probably ferguson, capello and lippi at the minute. though i've a lot of respect for managers who go to other countries and succeed like trappatoni and van gaal.
carrafan Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Shocked that no one has mentioned Phil 'Phil Brown' Brown, yet.
Cam Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Are you Phil 'Phil Brown' Brown? Rafa is in that elite group but is battling relegation from it due to being tied up in string (some from the owners and some of his own doing). Ferguson, sadly, clearly tops the list. And Mourinho is in there. Obviously the list doesn't include many excellent managers at a lower level... some of whom could do an equally brilliant job at a higher level but most of whom have reached their maximum; it doesn't stop them being excellent managers though. No mention of Ancellotti yet? Successful in Italy and top of the league here.
Cam Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Oh, and of course there's David Brent. Not just a manager but a comedian and a friend to all; "He made the people laugh".
Jarg Armani Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 In my head Mourinho hates Guardiola, he's come along and done the Mourinho act, but he's slicker and better looking. Mourinho is The Strokes and Guardiola is The Kings of Leon. Suddenly Guardiola is headlining Glastonbury and 19 year old girls all know the words to his songs... Meanwhile Mourinho gets talked about wistfully by indie heads, he still gets good reviews in the NME, but it comes across as fond nostalgia more than anything else. Jose is fuming.

Interesting perspective. I'd liken Mourinho a bit more to Elton John myself. A whiney little bitch. (Of course my opinion on that will change if he ever became our manager)
growler Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 whilst guardiola (sp?) is a quality manager, he had a great base tp start with, and only been there a year. the best manager should bemore than just results in a year. its about the team he built, succeeding consistently, and doing it across borders if possible FergusonCapelloRafa/Wenger The ferguson, unfortunately is obviousCapello has done it across italy and spain and now doing it internationally Rafa did it in spain, twice, with an under-rated team in a 2 team league. its like taking Hearts or motherwell to the SPL title and uefa cup winners. the won the european cup with smicer, traore, cisse, baros, biscan and other shining lights and reached the final again 2 years later. On the other hand, without wenger, arsenal were in a death spiral, and the mancs would have passed our 18 years ago. and he did it on shoe string whilst winning titles and funding a new stadium.
StevieC Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 HiddinckCappelloWenger Proven across borders and with different clubs/countries/resources

Gunga Din Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 Rafa probably isnt in the top 3 in the premier league, never mind the top 3 in the world anyway, Ferguson by a considerable distance whether you like it or not, is the best about. Mourinho has to be there on account of everywhere he goes he wins the league, and Pep Guardiola at Barcelona would be 3rd, IMVHO
Ostrich Man Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 HiddinckCappelloWenger Proven across borders and with different clubs/countries/resourcesyeah cause what wenger did with monaco, grampus and arsenal far outstrips what fergie did with st mirren, aberdeen and utd. glipe.

Rimbeux Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 How is guardiola better than Rafa? Or Rafa better than Mourinho?
Hassony Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 Or Rafa better than Mourinho? Mourinho has only ever won the league with the richest club in the league (Porto, Chelsea and Inter), Rafa's two league titles with Valancia are far more impressive
Rimbeux Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 Mourinho has only ever won the league with the richest club in the league (Porto, Chelsea and Inter), Rafa's two league titles with Valancia are far more impressive I disagree. I think he has a ridiculously good record and it goes deeper into the consistency of his teams and their winning mentality, the way they utterly buy into the cult of him and go through the line for him. It's also often overlooked that he also won the CL with an unfancied side as some would like to dismiss his stupidly good league title record as just outspending everyone else, maybe because they are put off by his personality. On the wider thing, I doubt many outside Liverpool fans would have Rafa in the world's top three, I agree with Wayne that it's a debate about him being in the PL top three.
mick Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 I'd go: Ferguson - whatever you think of him as a person he's one of the greatest managers of all time Mourinho - for what he has done at every club he has been at - still only mid 40's (not a huge fan of his style of football) Lippi - fantastic manager who has been out of the club game since 04 managing Italy most of the time - won world cup in '06 (duh!) . I loved watching that Juve team of the mid to late ninties - zidane, Deschamps, Jugovic, Di Livio, If Capello wins world cup with Ing-Er-Land next year he'd be up there - but he won't
