Ex-Liverpool and Everton star Abel Xavier converts to Islam and quits football at 37

The Portugal star now wants to go by the name of Faisal Xavier and will embark on humanitarian projects after failing to find a club.

He last played for LA Galaxy in 2008 and he has now decided to give up on his career.

Xavier, 37, joined Liverpool from Everton in 2002 and scored twice in 21 appearances for the club.

He also played in two spells for Middlesbrough, the second in 2006 after serving a one-year ban for failing a drugs test.

He moved to Major League Soccer club LA Galaxy to play out the final games of his career alongside David Beckham.

Xavier said: 'It's an emotional goodbye and I hope to participate in something very satisfying in a new stage of my life.

'In moments of grief, I have found comfort in Islam. Slowly, I learned a religion that professes peace, equality, freedom and hope. These are foundations with which I identify.'

Peter Sutcliffe's negative.

I firmly believe that when scouting a player we should include an evaluation of past haircut form as one of the criteria. Think of the pain that would have saved us over the years.

Will be one of those trivia questions about players that played for Liverpool and Everton, but nobody will remember because he was so crap.

The story itself is a late contender for the most irrelevant story of 2009 though.

Might not have been the best player ever, but I always liked him.

agreed, had a reputation for being s****, when he was actually a decent utility player

scored a few for us too from RB

I didnt think he was a bad player at all. Cost very little and did a pretty decent job. Annoyed the blues**** by moving to us too.

I think in many ways he was a shrewd singing at the time - cheap, versatile, and experienced.

My biggest issue is that it was at the expense of Stephen Wright who I really rated, and whilst he's seemingly not reached the standards I expected him to, I still wonder if things would have been different without injury and how things would have panned out if he stayed at Liverpool.
