One last question before I bid ye farewell

If we'd of lost Istanbul and Cardiff on pens would you still support Rafa so vehemently ?

Hard facts, we won two cups on two shoot outs. Nothing to do with managerial skill or nouse, its to do with who can hold their bottle from ten yards.

I am not belittling Istanbul, it was one of my most treasured footballing memories as was Cardiff (but 2001 not 2006).

Obviously many of you will turn this thread/post into a wagon load of abuse towards myself. but do me a favour, tell it to me in the pub and not on here, probably The Stanley from now on.

And I take it getting to Istanbul and Cardiff was also a fluke? Goodbye and good riddance, close the door on your way out.

I forgot we got bye's to those 2 finals. Cant see too many vehemnet defences of the manager in here either but i doubt you actually read other peoples posts.

I think thats very harsh. Istanbul was not just one match, it was an odyssey. Crap in the league but wonderful in the knockout stages. Benitez is due great credit for that

Forgotten your wind up smiley there Kev?

It's certainly one way of looking at it.

Another way of looking at it is that he's an excellent cup winner. What he did in 2005 was tremendous, the real 'Benitez' wins came in the CL Semi and Quarters. The decision to put Hamman on wasn't as inspired as peo...You know what, it's only going to be mis-construed.

It's a fine line between success and failure, I am incredibly grateful for what Rafa did in 05 and 06...But that was 05 and 06. Since then we have finished 2nd and that is the closest Benitez is going to get us to the league £50 to the HJC says we won't win the league under Benitez.

Istanbul was phenomenal - not only one of the greatest footballing achievements but one of the greatest sporting achievements too. To try and airbrush Rafa out of this (as you have been doing quite consistently for a long time now) is not only disrespectful to the manager himself but also disrespectful to the whole wonderful run and everybody involved in it.

Question to you - with hindsight, would you rather us lost the Final if it meant Rafa losing his job much earlier?

I would because I support the mananger of the club. I personally think Rafa is still the right man for the job and that he's moving us in the right direction. When he took over we were a million miles from the league and now we're a lot closer apart from this years blip (Which every other team is struggling with as well for some reason). We've had less cash than all of our competitors and we've still managed to be there or thereabouts. I think if we bin Rafa now (apart from it being monumentally unfair not to give him at least another season based on what he's achieved with the club) then I think we really will be looking at 'doing a Leeds or Newcastle or even Forest. With him gone, at this time, with no money I can see nothing but a complete freefalling spiral down a division. Perhaps more. Leeds thought it could never happen.

I have every confidence that if given time (Which he should be) he can get us back to where we were last season and perhaps beyond. With no cash, I can't see how anyone could think another manager could do better at this time.

This would hold more credence if you started with "Once Upon a Time" like all the other fairy stories.

How many points behind the League winners were we when he took over? Did we get closer during his management? Did we miss out by just a few points last season? I would suggest the fact is that yes, we pretty much improved and got closer to the winners. That's a trend that nearly won us the league.

And your response was hardly a response.

Istanbul we beat the Italian and English Champions on the way to the final

Cardiff'06 we beat the mancs and Chelsea on the way to the final

both were great, Istanbul especially, why try to denigrate the achievement of winning both those cups?

Domestic bliss. Dad's offering people out on the internet.

No, just telling people were I drink after the match if they would like to repeat things in person.

But the gloves are off I'll admit that.

I've had enough of reading s*** and bile posted towards my lad, I think I have been very tolerant especially towards people I used to be happy drinking with and buying them a beer.

Doesn't matter what his views are or how he expresses them, there was no need for a lot of the s*** that was posted.

And well done for turning this into a completely different thread- I used to be accused of that you know.

The personal abuse is unnecessary, but i can see why it happens when he does things like logging in 5 minutes after a defeat purely to gloat.

If you're going to get annoyed at people abusing him, you should also get annoyed at Ant for provoking them.

That's fine, tell me in what games did Rafa change things ?

Give you a clue Pongolle and Mellor against Olympiakos changed things.

Care to give another example ?
