Former Wales and Lions captain Gareth Thomas has broken one of the major taboos that surround sport by revealing he is gay.

I can't say this was a huge surprise as there have been a few rumours over the years regarding Thomas' sexuality. I respect him for going public (even if it was to the Mail) and think this is a fairly big deal; having Welsh rugby referee Nigel Owens announce last year that he was gay may have helped, and Alfie's announcement may well compel other gay sportsmen and women to come out without fear. However, I couldn't help thinking that this would be less likely with footballers, I suppose this would mainly be down to the fans on the terraces than anything else; I don't think there would be much of a change from the treatment that Justin Fashanu received.
