he might as well had pulled out a pistol and shot himself in the head there and then.

It's a green light to the owners to fire him if we come 5th.

He'd be getting sacked if that happens anyway so him saying it is hardly a green light.

They don't need a light. Nothing wrong with a bit of confidence. Not enough of it about at the moment

if we fail to finish in the top 4 this season, it would be the biggest underachievement at this club since the 1950's

Its too early to say that. You don't know what is going to happen

And have you blanked the 90s from your mind? Don't blame you if you have like

He was probably asked directly about it in the pre-match conference.

I fail to see how saying to the assembled media "I'm not sure we're going to be able to get fourth - we're really playing poorly and the players confidence is on the floor" would have improved matters or made a top-four finish more likely. Dodging the question would have also shown weakness and a lack of confidence in the players/staff/himself.

I admire him for taking the pressure himself.

(And in terms of mockers I seem to recall him saying something like: "I don't say we can win, I say we WILL win" before the Chelsea semi-final in 2005).

with the squad of players we have, and baring in mind how s**** the non "big 4" are, then i'd say it would be the biggest underachievement in half a century, and that includes the 90's

I think theres nothing wrong with what he's said and I think he'll be sacked if we finish outside the Top 4 anyway. And I expect he thinks so too.

Plus, we should be able to finish 4th with the players we have.

What if Spurs spend another 30m in January? What if City spend 100m? What if we win both cups and finish 5th? Its far too early for daft outlandish statements like that

You mean even though some of them are injured sometimes? :o

Squad? Are you serious?

i'm deadly serious. unless you are genuinely going to tell me that the loss of an average right back, who was replaced by an excellent right back, and the loss of a defensive midfielder replaced by an attacking midfielder should mean we finish this season with about 25 points less than last season

spurs have been told they must sell to buy. city have spent a squillion quid, and their best buy is craig bellamy, who wasnt deemed good enough to play for us.

I think that reply is a little disingenuous to be fair. Bellamy was sold in order to raise money that helped fund Torres. They can also call upon Adebayor, SWP, Robinho, Tevez, Santa Cruz - all big money buys - plus whoever they buy this January. That's just strikers, so their ability to rotate/replace is quite a way ahad of ours.

I'm sure Daniel Levy wants players off his books, they have so many of them but he says the same at every AGM and then the club back their manager. I know 'net spend' is a taboo discussion but Redknapp will buy in January and it will be buys that will out weigh any income for Bentley, Pavluchenko etc, who they will lose big money on.

We have a smaller squad, buying power that has been effectively reduced for 2 years and an injury list that has hit KEY players simultaneously.

The manager has effectively been selling to buy for a while and has had to try and get both quality and quantity - the above two have not.

Adebayor is a better player than Bellamy. And loads slated Bellamy whilst he was here as not good enough for us, you included. He left because Torres was signing and he got the opportunity to get the kind of money he would never have earnt at LFC.
