Red Kent Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I would hate us to treat the FA Cup this year as a training ground for fringe players. The FA Cup offers one last chance of silverware this season and I would like to aee a full strength team out against Reading. The league has gone and the way we have been playing in Europe this season I'm not expecting us to get past February in the Europe League.
Zoob Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 The FA cup is the slightly ugly girl at the party (who used to be far prettier) who you shag because it's better than going home alone.
Red Kent Posted December 14, 2009 Author Posted December 14, 2009 The FA cup is the slightly ugly girl at the party (who used to be far prettier) who you shag because it's better than going home alone. The FA Cup has been devalued by the likes of us and others in favour of 4th place. I cannot comprehend that someone would prefer 4th place to winning the FA Cup.
Zoob Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 The absurd thing is that if (huge - and very unlikely if) we won the FA cup and the Europa consolation vase, I'd be chuffed. Yet if it meant finishing outside the top 4, the season would probably still be labeled a failure by many
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 winning stuff is why we exist - yes, everyone wants to be in the EC, but not everyone can win it. Some people owuld be happier qualifying for it every year for the next 10 & winning nowt than picking up the odd cup here & there. The FAC is massive to me still & I f***ing want us to win it. And the UEFA too
Siang Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 win both FA and Europa...win the the Charity Shielf and UEFA Super Cup to make it up... CL is a bonus
windy city red Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I would put the FA cup above the Europa. We desperately need to salvage abit of our dignity in the domestic league. Full strength against Reading.
Bailo Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I cannot comprehend that someone would prefer 4th place to winning the FA Cup.You might not like it, but surely you can comprehend why?

The league has gone and the way we have been playing in Europe this season I'm not expecting us to get past February in the Europe League. Think we'll treat it the same way as if we'd been top of the league and in the next round of the 'Champions' League. As many fit players as we have available. And despite it being an incredible proposition, the league, even now, still hasn't actually gone. If we'd won yesterday - we would have been right back in it.

I cannot comprehend that someone would prefer 4th place to winning the FA Cup. The FA Cup lost any and all of its prestige once the Mancs opted out of it. That put the final nail in the coffin of the old girl. Since then it's never been the same and never will be.
stressederic Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I'd quite like us to win it. Actually at the moment I'd quite like us to win in general. I'm a simple sort.
ManxRed Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 How do we treat it? We go one-nil up early in the first half and then sit back and invite them on to us for the remainder of the game. We lose 3-2.

I'd love to win that trophy, don't get me wrong, but the club needs 4th place more for a number of reasons, not least money and the ability to attract top players. That said, we should be going all out to win it. Edited December 14, 2009 by Edinjapan
Gravy Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 It's a tough one, but 4th place or FA Cup. If you could only have one what would you have? FA Cup sure because it is a trophy, but we HAVE to get 4th place!!!
Falconhoof Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 here we are still talking about winning trophies when we can barely string a good 90 minutes together against a decent side.
Andy @ Allerton Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 here we are still talking about winning trophies when we can barely string a good 90 minutes together against a decent side. We strung a good 45 minutes together though. Once everyone gets back to full fitness, there doesn't seem to be that much to panic about. Still the same issues. Injuries and recovery from those injuries and cover within the squad.

Let's see what they can do.
Gary Wolf Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 If we don't get the 4th place, FA Cup won't have anything to do with it. Though, no doubt, a busy schedule can be one more nice excuse.
Red Kent Posted December 14, 2009 Author Posted December 14, 2009 Liverpool Football Club is about winning trophies and not accepting second best (4th place) Maybe the new song should be: We're gonna win fourth place [clap clap]We're gonna win fourth place [clap clap]And now you're gonna belieeeeeve usWe're gonna win fourth place [clap clap] Why hasn't the club put finishing third or fourth place in our honours list ? Tell you why....because it's not an honour.
Spion kop Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 The FA cup should award a champions league place rather than the Europa league.

I remember, years ago, relegation threatened teams who were progressing in the cup often contemplating whether they'd rather win the FA Cup or stay in their division. The balanced view was that staying up was the more important thing, and I think 4th place now represents the keeping of your place in what is effectively the new European Super league . Not getting 4th is like getting relegated.

Gary Wolf Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Let me put it this way. If we were still in the title race, then staying in the later stages of the FA Cup could make a problem. Sacrificing it would be justified. But are we really so weak, as to be afraid that playing the Cups will prevent us from taking the 4th? If not, why this alternative? Let's fight for the CL place AND play in the Cup simultaneously.
