Mascherano

Mentions to Torres (Quite simply our best player bar none - he was superb when he came on - hopefully will play in the league on Sunday), Pacheco - impressed me a lot when he came on. Hopefully can make the full step up.

Mascherano - had a good game, on the way back to his best

Dossena - I don't know if it's because of my low expectations, but he delivered one of his best matches for us, and didn't do it any worse than Riera or Babel have done. He is quite fast when he gains speed.

Aquilani - showed glimpses of what to be expected of him. Very good passer in narrow spaces, and always trying to play the ball with few touches.

CAvalieri is extremely one-footed, I didn't feel at ease with him in goal, even if his performance tonight was pretty flawless otherwise.

KUYT needs a rest. This was his baddest game for 2 years in the red jersey

I'm too old to be down with this hip talk - does that mean he was good?

1. Gerrard quality set pieces and all action display

2. Benayoun always lively and looking to create

3. Torres made a huge difference when he came on

special mentions to Dossena and Aquilani who both had their moments as well as Pacheco in his cameo

Insua and Kuyt definitely both need a rest/taken out of firing line

Think Gerrard was better last night than he has been in previous games. Obviously he's still heading towards full fitness - and if for nothing else, the game last night was useful to introduce Aqua and get Gerrard closer to being fully fit - and once he's there hopefully the form will return and he'll end up bossing games. He still looks a bit injured to me though - but hopefully I'm wrong.

Thought it was a bit ridiculous (again) to have Kuyt as a lone forward. He just hasn't got the pace, although he worked as hard as ever - it's just not convincing. Felt sorry for him. Also would be interested for someone's views who watched it on telly - he kept getting flagged all over the shop for offside and at the game he didn't look offside at all. Fair play if he was - if so - that's a terrific offside trap Fiorentina were playing.

There weren't many replays of the offside incidents as far as i remember, but atleast two of the offsides were quite clear. With Kuyt, you know he's gonna work hard, but he didn't win any duels in the air or on the ground, his passing were worse than ever. He just looked knackered.

Often with Kuyt, you can tell by the firdst five minutes if he's going to have a good game or not. And today it was quite obvious what kind of game he would have

Dossena - if for no other reason than that may well be his last game in a Liverpool shirt.

Gerrard - His best performance this season.

Torres - He is the best striker in the world bar none.

Hugely impressed with Pacheo when he came on. Sometimes you just know when a player is going to make it at the top level. That was one of those occasions. I'd love to see him playing with Torres in a few games.

The only real downsides; Dirk needs a break as does Insua. Skertl has lost confidence and that seems to be affecting his centreback partners no matter who they are.

The upside; the team are obviously lacking confidence but there were a few instances of smart, quick passing and link-up play that was promising. Aquilani was at the heart of that and suggested a style far more in keeping with the Rafa's brilliant Valencia side that we've seen. Johnson, Gerrard, Torres, Benyoun, Agger (and Pepe), of the established first team players are all extremely comfortable on the ball, possess game intelligence and can play the long and short passing game. Add pace (which they are all capable of) and an injection of confidence then you have the makings of an exceptional side.
