richwilks Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 When is the draw for this? I'd love to see a couple of youngsters given an opportunity in this competition to see what they are made of. A couple of the top ones in alongside 9 experienced players shouldn't weaken us too much. I'd particularly like to see Amoo on the right and Pacheco behind Torres for a couple of games to see how they step up.
Rory Fitzgerald Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 Uhhh, remove the title, its an eyesore. Can we have a sub-sub-sub-forum for the Europa Cup that can only be accessed on a Thursday. I fear I will resent this cup at 3pm on Saturday's and Sundays !
sutty Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 The Sunday games that we'll have as a result will make me cry
Gunga Din Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 aye. one of our two chances of winning a trophy, lets play the kids
anny road Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 aye. one of our two chances of winning a trophy, lets play the kids people are f***ing daft at times
sutty Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 aye. one of our two chances of winning a trophy, lets play the kidsThe plus side of this apart from a trophy opportunity is some quality aways

CarraLegend Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I dont really see any reason not to pick our best players, I know theres an extra round compared to the CL but its only two games. If we were playing in the CL we'd be choosing our best team so no point not doing the same here. Plus its about time we won a trophy and winning breeds confidence. If we want to rest players then get the job done in the first leg and do it if possible.
psl Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I'd particularly like to us pick our best players and win the f***ing thing Me too. Its great being in finals and there are only a few cups to go round.
stressederic Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 Now that we're in the Europa League (f*** it I'm still going to call it the Uefa Cup) it would seem a bit strange not to try and win the thing. Otherwise we might as well have just finished bottom of our group and f***ed Europe off completely.

Swipe Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 Rafa has said the league and finishing in the top 4 is the priority now, though. He won't play the kids, but I think he'll rest a few for these games, if he can.
Sion Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 we should play the first leg to obliterate teams then play a carling cupesque team in the second leg
surf Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 i think people have forgotton how great 2001 one was
DJS Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 If we were cruising in the league, then this wouldnt be such an issue but with the injuries, more games and everything else, the uefa cup is very much an inconvenience, compared to making sure we finish in the top 4. If it has an impact on our chances for that, then i'd happily f*ck it off. Alternatively, if we see an upturn in form between now and next February and we're looking more comfortable in the league, then that's a different story.
richwilks Posted December 1, 2009 Author Posted December 1, 2009 I'd like to see us win it. I can't see that playing perhaps 1 or 2 of the younger players who are on the verge of the 1st team squad is going to cause dramatic problems. If so they shouldn't be near the first team squad. FWIW I'd have Amoo and Pacheco in the Saturday squads ahead of the likes of Voronin and Babel for a start.

Andy Mac Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I'd love to go to a couple of European aways this winter (work permitting). Just had a look at the teams in the competition and leading their groups and there's some pretty tasty teams left in there. Then add the teams dropping out of the European Cup and it's not going to be easy to win the thing.
Sion Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 FWIW I'd have Amoo and Pacheco in the Saturday squads ahead of the likes of Voronin and Babel for a start. I think most fans have been wanting that all year. It's the thing i've most been annoyed at Rafa for doing/not doing. It's not like by taking Voronin out the team we'd be losing anything, so in effect it's no risk.
DJS Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 wrong. we're not going to win the league this year, so should try to win this. besides, winning games is good for confidence and morale, which compensates massively tiredness The main gist of my point was that the Uefa Cup shouldnt be allowed to negatively impact or jeopordise our attempts to ensure a top four finish. That's wrong, is it? Right-oh.

That's wrong, is it? Right-oh. It absolutely is not. If we finish outside the top 4 we're in deep s*** whether we're UEFA cup winners or not.

It could help massively with their development and who knows one of them may settle very well. Someone like Pacheco could improve massively alongside Torres and Amoo could be a very dangerous player.
