Help needed with blog/website.

I'm in the early stages of developing a blog with wordpress http://destinationexposed.com/ I've got no experience in designing a website and comments/tips would be greatly appreciated. One of the things I want to do is create a forum, but the plug in I've downloaded for this doesn't seem to work. Can anyone recommend a way of creating a forum? Also are there any must have plug-ins for wordpress?
