Chelsea on verge of signing Sergio Aguero for £40m from Atletico Madrid

By Jason Burt

Chelsea are expected to clinch a British-record £40 million transfer deal to sign the Argentine international Sergio Aguero at a meeting scheduled with his agents next Monday.

The 21-year-old Atletico Madrid striker is close to agreeing terms with Chelsea who had inquired about his availability during the summer.

At that time Aguero had demanded a salary of more than £6 million-a-year which would have made him Chelsea's highest paid player – which the club balked at – but it is hoped he will now compromise on his wages.

Chelsea will meet his agent Bruno Satin, who is head of the football division of IMG, one of the world's biggest sports agencies, on Monday to hopefully agree a deal after Atletico finally sanctioned Aguero's sale earlier this week.

The Spanish club are still hoping to receive more than £50 million for Aguero but, it's understood, are now more willing to compromise on the transfer fee if a deal can be done.

Nevertheless, a transfer of £40 million would represent a Premier League record, smashing the £32.5 million paid last year by Manchester City for Robinho, and would also be a restatement of Chelsea's intent, having not spent hugely under owner Roman Abramovich over the past three years.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has targeted Aguero as one of his major signings during the January transfer window. The club have been given permission to buy and sell after the Fifa-imposed transfer ban, following the Gaël Kakuta affair, was frozen pending an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Aguero scored two spectacular goals during the recent 2-2 draw with Chelsea in the Champions League. After the match Ancelotti joked that he would like to sign the exciting striker but it appears he was deadly earnest.

A meeting took place earlier this week with Chelsea discussing their strategy as to how they could acquire Aguero. Satin has also been demanding a hefty agent's fee – thought to be as much as £5 million – for the deal to go through but, again, he may be willing to compromise.

If Chelsea sign Aguero, as all parties now expect, it will represent something of a coup especially as it was thought they may struggle to acquire big-name players in January.

Indeed Chelsea may follow up the deal with a move for Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery, who would command a similar fee and who is also greatly admired by Ancelotti.

The deal for Aguero is sensitive for Atletico, who have struggled this season. The striker is their main asset and also a huge fans' favourite and the club's board has been concerned about alienating supporters.

Satin is in Brazil at the moment, having also travelled to Argentina, to try to clinch a number of deals to sign players who could replace Aguero in the fans' affection.

Such is Chelsea's determination to secure the deal they may, eventually, be willing to go beyond the apparent ceiling of £40 million that was set to sign Aguero.

They are acutely aware that if their CAS appeal fails, they cannot make another signing for some time. Even so Aguero will not be eligible for Chelsea in the Champions League this season, having already played for Atletico.

If Aguero does sign it will cast some doubt on the first-team future of Nicolas Anelka, with Ancelotti set to partner the Argentine with Didier Drogba in a preferred two-man attack.

Chelsea also remain keen on Benfica's Angel Di Maria, but deem the fee demanded for him too high, and Everton's Jack Rodwell.

Full of maybe, if's coulds etc and no quotes. I can't see Atletico letting him go at this stage of a very busy season.

Its his buyout clause though isnt it, so they cant really stop him.

Usually specific in its details tho - meeting next Monday etc & I wouldn't expect the Telegraph to make it up. No it doesn't have any quotes, but if the journo's been told something by a source or off the record then it wouldn't.

I think Sid Lowe has been writing that Atletico have had a terrible start to the season as well.

I think I read (probably Sid Lowe as well) that they've got serious financial problems

If it is later decided that they should be punished for the transfer malarky - will they have to give him back - will they f*** but they should do - still can't believe the backdown on their transfer ban - disgraceful

I hate that shower and will be gutted to see Aguero playing for them

We always seem to be strongly linked with the young South American strikers, and never end up with any!

We've been linked to Aguero since before he was at Madrid and didnt take the risk on stumping up the money for him. We were strongly linked with Pato too, who's now tearing it up at Milan. Even recently we were linked with Keirrison (who's now gone to Barca), and Lavezzi (who now seems to be linked with every top club in the Premiership).

Higuain as well. We spot them all but can't afford any of them.

I think hes overrated and suffers from the new Maradonna tag.

He is better than Tevez, but thats not saying much to be honest

very good player, but £50m is silly

I think its a fad that people think that he's a second striker. He started out as one, but for Atletico he simply plays on the shoulder of defenders and some of the runs he makes are special. Diego Forlan is the one who drops deep and does a lot of creating for Aguero's goals. They have gelled really well.
