Elisha_Scott Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Who does everybody think could be the stars of the World Cup? - Aquilani could be massive for Italy if he is fit.
Hassony Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 I am more concerned with what FIFA are planning to do with the horns than worrying about who the stars will be
kop205 Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 It is weird. Despite the fact that there is more football on TV than ever before, I can't ever remember being less clued-up about the 'world game' - which sides are good, who their big stars are, who the up and coming talents/ones to watch are. I care as much about Liverpool as I ever have done, but I'm just not a 'football fan' in the sense of watching any match that is on. That isn't a pop at people who are, by the way - I'm just not sure why it is that my interest in the wider game is so diminshed. I've always hated the Engald national side, even back in Primary School I wouldn't support them, but I'd have a decent knowledge of who else was decent.
Maldini Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 I think a lot of the same names we know will make the biggest impact. Argentina will be stronger than they showed in the qualifiers and Messi will be at the forefront of that. Aquilani's impact could be tempered by how poor Italy are. Alex Pato could emerge as a world beater for Brazil and Hamsik will make an impression for Slovakia if they can get out of the group. Ghana could be dark horses to do well, they've decent players throughout the team, a few really top class players and a load of good young players who could make an impact over the next year. Same goes for Serbia
Gunga Din Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 if Spain do well, Alonso will be a huge player for them. Torres if fit as well. I also think we will see some totally unknown announce themselves, and Asian sides starting to emerge a bit more as well
deacon Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 Luis Fabiano. His goalscoring ratio has been phenonmenal for Brazil. He could be a decent bet for top scorer. Honduras could be a surprise team. Wilson Palacios is a superb player, but not sure how much a midfield enforcer will shine at the world cup.
floyd Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 From what Elisha has just said, I am taking it as Aquilani is absloute mustard in training. That'll do for me.

Swipe Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 Iniesta could well be the player of the tournament if Spain hit form. Agree. His champions league form last year converted those who didn't know about him, but he could become a proper world star if he has a good tournament. I
The Hitman Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 I think Ivory Coast are going to be dark horses in this one.Look to have a very, very good side.
Snoeker Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 I think Ivory Coast are going to be dark horses in this one.Look to have a very, very good side. "dark horses" *giggle*
_00_deathscar Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 From what Elisha has just said, I am taking it as Aquilani is absloute mustard in training. That'll do for me. But I don't like mustard
allawee Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 if Spain do well, Alonso will be a huge player for them. Torres if fit as well. I also think we will see some totally unknown announce themselves, and Asian sides starting to emerge a bit more as wellI have the same feeling. Unknown stadiums, atmosphere, continent, climate etc etc, will all be a major factor. I will be surprised if a European team actually won the world cup this time! My money is on Brazil. Ghana and Japan to do really well in this world cup, and being from the middle east, I would love for Bahrain to do well (if they qualify!)
Sion Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 In terms of lower profile players doing well... Alexis Sanchez, Takayuki Morimoto and Marek Hamsik are three. I reckon Chile and could do well if they get a favourable group drawAs could Honduras. Shame Bosnia drew Portugal in the play-offs... as they've got a potential upset in them and some good players. Still hoping they could progress Also find it funny how either Bahrain or New Zealand will be in the World cup whilst countless better european and south american sides won't. Will be interesting at least.

Will be interesting at least.I completely disagree with this comment....it is like saying what's the point of non league teams playing the FA cup as it will always be the top teams playing in the semi's and the final! Also need I remind you of South Korea's achievement in 2002. Cameroon in 1990. Morocco in 1986. Algeria beating the might of Germany in 1982. Peru making it to the later stages of 1978. I am not saying that Bahrain are better than France or the Rep of Ireland, but on their day, they could beat them in a world cup match which is part of the appeal (again, remember, Senegal versus France in 2002 and Cameroon vs Argentina in 1990).
floyd Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 again, remember, Senegal versus France in 2002yeah, I do regretably, because I thought, we had just signed two excellent players.

It'll just be strange having such poor teams in there. The teams you mentioned were all better than New Zealand, they're abysmal. I don't know much about Bahrain apart from the fact they lost 5 games out of 8 in a group of Japan, Aus, Qatar and Uzbekistan, which doesn't suggest they're anything other than very poor.
Hassony Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 bahrain were unlucky not to qualify to the last world cup, they were better than t&t, they got a good footbaling side, better than NZ, but the average hight in the squad must be about 5'7"

No, it would be absolutely nothing like saying that because the non-league teams aren't in the FA Cup at the expense of better sides. That said, there are obvious arguments as to why it is important to have all regions represented even if isn't on paper the best sides - and as you say surprise packages are part of the fun of it all.
John am Rhein Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 the days when the middle ranking European teams were obviously better than the best Asian teams are decades behind us
deacon Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 the days when the middle ranking European teams were obviously better than the best Asian teams are decades behind us Really? With the exception of the 2002 World Cup, when has an Asian nation performed well at a World Cup?
Gunga Din Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 the days when the middle ranking European teams were obviously better than the best Asian teams are decades behind us utter rubbish. the world cup is essentially the European Championships plus brazil and a nominal "Surprise package"
muleskinner Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 utter rubbish. the world cup is essentially the European Championships plus brazil and a nominal "Surprise package" Er, Argentina might have something to say about that, quite a decent record in the tournament, no?
