I would drop Masch (he'll be knackered anyway) and play Gerrard in the middle, yossi in Gerrards role and Riera on the left. These are the games where we don't need Masch.

3 games coming up in a week. He can't play all of them after all that travelling and the emotion of skippering Argentina to 2 defeats.

If you have to choose one of the three to give him a rest then its Burnley. Its probably fortunate that we are starting our european campaign with Debrecen at home.

Got a horrible feeling about this game. These post international home games against percieved lesser teams can be a struggle. I'd take a scrappy one il right now.

 

With Masch out I expect it will be Lucas in his best position - the holding role - alongside Gerrard. Benayoun right, Riera left, Kuyt upfront with Torres.

Aurelio's back in contention & we also have the Doss - so it's not inconcievable Fabio could go to centre MF

Whatever the lineup I don't want us to open the game cautiously. Often when we do we struggle to kill off weaker teams. During the end of last season we had a habit of going completely gung-ho on them which led us to effectively finish off some teams in the first half, very rarely were we caught off by being over offensive. Would like to see that kind of mentality back.

If Fabio is OK he should play with Lucas, keep Gerrard where he is and keep Insua in the team - seems silly dropping someone who hasn't been away on international duty.

Given his lack of match sharpness I reckon there's no chance he'll play centre-mid.

Masch is rated extremely doubtful not to play, so dont think we'll see him.

 

We have a few variations to get around this.

You can get 22-1 against Burnley to win this on Betfair. That's ridiculously long odds on any game in this league. I've stuck £20 on them - hope to f*** I lose it, even more so cause I'll be at the game, but the payoff would be some small consolation.

 

Me backing them is good anti-mockers anyway. I always lose.
