Flight Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 ... needs a slap. How anyone can call other people down for having a go at Carra is beyond me. He's culpable for three goals in four games and we are leaking goals from set pieces as though it was eight years ago. Not to mention injuring Skrtel going for a ball he should have been nowhere near. Knox was spot on. A world class, dominating CB, is top of our needs list.
Red Kent Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 We have got a very inexperienced Liverpool defence. We have two new fullbacks. more often than not a new centre-half, and Carra who is not playing to the level we all know he can. Yes we are defending crap, but there are reasons for that.

RedHarvest Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 It's a shambles at the moment...no communication, no trust, no confidence...rather than make a scapegoat of our best and most committed defender you have to question the coaching.
CarraLegend Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 you have to question the coaching. Do you? Or maybe we are just having a bad spell like every club in world football does at some point? Not to mention we are missing our first choice left back (though Insua is quality too but Fabio is better at defending crosses), a new right back is settling in and we've had one centre back out injured, the other two getting knocks and another debutant. Its no surprise we are looking rusty. And infact most other defences are, Hull should have had 3 or 4 at Chelsea, Burnley should have had a couple. Arsenal havent kept a clean sheet yet, Man Utd look very shakey etc etc
sutty Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 The defending isn't an issue in open play All 7 goals we have conceded this season have been from set pieces, directly or indirectly Defending set pieces extends beyond the back 4
Gunga Din Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 The defending isn't an issue in open play All 7 goals we have conceded this season have been from set pieces, directly or indirectly Defending set pieces extends beyond the back 4 our defending from set pieces is shambolic, and needs sorting. teams have worked out how to exploit our system, and its going to cost us massively. i think we need to employ a mixture of man marking and zonal. leave a couple of players at the half way line so that we have an "out" ball when defending corners free kicks, and the opposition will not put as many forward, which will give us a better numerical advantage.
Red Kent Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 Benitez will never change the zonal marking system so its pointless debating it.

Gunga Din Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 there's merits and issues with both systems execution defo has to be better than it has been the 1st 4 games whatever system is chosen Organisation is the key. i think Reina needs to start coming a bit more often as well. it is the only weakness in his game i think. he needs to come out and starting claiming the ball more.

From free kicks we're too deep. Their second goal was a straight free kick from well inside their half and the initial header was won goal side of the penalty spot The corner, that's got to be Pepe's.
MFletcher Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 We just need to attack the ball with more aggression and purpose. Too often the goals we concede from set pieces are down almost entirely to players not taking responsibility when they should.

Flight Posted August 29, 2009 Author Posted August 29, 2009 What was he culpable for today exactly? He was flat on his f***ing a***, giving Bolton a free strike at goal from 8 yards out from the position he was covering. How many 'mistakes' is he allowed before we are allowed to question it ? He's been out muscled in the air to two goals in our previous games.
Gunga Din Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 They get those chances because the players do not attack the ball aggressively enough and clear it out when they should. no Fletch, they get those chances because they get time and space. its a simple game of numbers. we have 11 back, they get 10 forward. we mark space, they double up. it causes problems.

Carra has been our weakest centre half now for 18 months. his game has gone down hill alarmingly recently. maybe its not having Hyypia with him, but he is more a liability than as asset at centre half at the minute.

No, the ball has to come in. In zonal marking, you are supposed to attack and clear out the ball if it is in the zone in front of you or to your right. If we attacked it with more aggression and purpose we'd soon stop leaking goals, but we seem tentative at times, almost unwilling to risk getting clattered. The two systems both require players to attack the ball purposefully. We'd concede just as many from man marking with the tentative way we are dealing with set pieces at the minute.

Hassony Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 there is. he needs to come out, clear everyone out of his way, and catch the thing. he is well capable of it.He stopped doing it since the united game 2 seasons ago
