carrafan Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 (edited) This thing with corners and indirect free kicks is that its rarely a genuine, world class undefendable ball that gets a goal. A lot of the times its just the attackers winning a simple ball in the air that misses, the goalkeeper, the first defender and the guy 10 yards from you which helps a team score. Aurelio's supposed to be a set piece genius but doesnt seem to do too well for us when taking a corner or the odd freekick. Surely its not the set piece taker thats the problem but our setup and our squad of players? Usually if teams dont have big men on every part of the pitch, its the centrebacks which take up the mantle. The likes of Terry, Vidic and Ferdinand win f***loads in the opposition box even if the dont score which simply increases their chances of getting one but Carra doesnt even go forward sometimes as he's not a threat? Skrtel's a big lad but doesnt win many in the oppositon area which is funny. Do we simply need more bodies in the box when going forward and our players to commit to decent balls put in the box or do we need to wait for a genuinely good ball to help us score? IMO, its not our freekick / corner taker but the system we use is the problem although i do think we'll become better once Agger - Skrtel take over from Carra in the years to come. Akadimi Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Yes , You are right We need to bodies who can use their heads in the forward, in box we really miss Sami Hybbia I didn't agree to leave him
Beardsley Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 As a start, it would help if we could get the ball past the first defender on our corners. We must be the worst team in the universe in converting corners into goals.
Hassony Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 lucas is probably the only one who tries to attack the ball, but he isn't really big enough or strong enough to cause any problems, maybe turner or showcross can make a difference if they are signed
meepins Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Defensively our work on set pieces is nearly as bad. How many free headers do we have to give away before this gets sorted? I was expecting a big effort to sort out such a major failing from last season ( e.g. Chelsea - we concede a corner and we hold our collective breath). It didn't take long for that expectation to be crushed - no problem for little Defoe to get a free header yesterday.
Earl Hafler Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 I wonder if Johnson takes a decent corner ? Because Carra's useless in the opposition area and Gerrard would be much better served trying to get on the end of a cross than take them. He's fecking abysmal at corners.

I also think Gerrard should be on the edge of the box for corners not taking them, either for charging in late or stay there for a big thunderbolt shot in the way the Mancs use Paul Scholes when he's fit.
lfc4eva99 Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 We need a bit of both really. We need the lads to attack the incoming corner and we need the delivery to be more accurate than what it is now, our crosses too, too loopy and slow imo, we need to be quicker with them. Torres,Kuyt,Gerrard are good headers of the ball, dont know how good Johnson is, but hes got the height for it, if Skrtel can chip in, we could do well. Apart from Sami, Lil Luis Garcia had a good leap on him, miss that.

Hassony Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 darren bent would have been a bloody ideal signing for us this summer.Agreed, if he would have been happy to sit on the bench when torres is fit. Although rafa could have lied to him I suppose
yellow jumper Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Haven't seen that but it sounds like it might excite and enthrall me on some level. just got done in the air, back post. darren bent would have been a bloody ideal signing for us this summer. if money were no object perhaps, and even then you'd surely consider other names ahead of him. i think this goes back to the benitez quotes of a few days ago about not being in for a big name attacker. the issue of finances notwithstanding, i think he was also making a point about the difficulty of accommodating that player, either by changing shape or simply keeping them in reserve. how many clubs these days have £10 + million forwards sitting on the bench most weeks? not very many (and those are usually being compensated to the tune of £100,000 a week), and rarely for very long. they either end up getting regular games or leave.
muleskinner Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 I'm sure even Darren Bent isn't stupid enought to think he would get games ahead of Torres.
Murphman Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 A 56 years old Spurs fan mate of mine spent a full five minutes explaining to my son why Darren Bent is the worst player spurs have ever had bar none.
Hassony Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 he was their top scorer last season. Did your son mention rebrov , dozzel, bentley...etc
stressederic Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 A 56 years old Spurs fan mate of mine spent a full five minutes explaining to my son why Darren Bent is the worst player spurs have ever had bar none. f***ing hell he's beating off some strong competition for that. Lets not forget this is a club who signed Ramon Vega.
