jonnyc Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/artic...pool100809.html Sebastien Bassong will be available for selection for our Premier League season opener against Liverpool on Sunday. The defender was handed a two-match suspension after being sent off whilst playing for Newcastle United against Fulham last May. However, given he served the first game of his ban against Aston Villa on the final day of the previous campaign as a Newcastle United player, it meant the suspension continued to apply to Newcastle United games and was therefore satisfied when his former club visited West Bromwich Albion on the opening day of the Championship season on Saturday. Come again.....surely as he was signed before Saturday the Newcastle game should not count.
stressederic Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 What? Bans have always followed over when the player moves.
fyds Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Seems odd...but as Torres, Riera and Gerrard all tore him a new one anyway...
Knox_Harrington Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 He was only registered as a Spurs player yesterday.
stressederic Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 He was only registered as a Spurs player yesterday. Bloody hell Spurs actually came up with a good idea.
fyds Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Hmm - always thought the player was 'banned', not the club, so the next two games he was clearly eligible to play?
Knox_Harrington Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Hmm - always thought the player was 'banned', not the club, so the next two games he was clearly eligible to play?He had one game left. He was a Newcastle player as of Saturday against WBA. He didn't take part in the game, following day he becomes a Spurs player and no longer is suspended.

Serko Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Not inn the spirit of the rules, methinks! The contraversy is due to the fact that Newcastle said they signed him last thursday and the player was giving interviews saying he was a spurs player. I agree it's not in the spirit of the rules, but if the move had only become public today probably nobody would see it as a big deal.
Florist Cinema Pond Goal Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 well played by spurs, very clever I've never seen those words together in the same sentence.
Mono Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 nowt wrong with what they did. I would expect we'd do the same..... although without the club statements etc asking everyone to acknowledge how clever we are
