Igors Uncle Dave Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 5 years or so ago there was much speculation as the Houllier era was coming to a close that VDV was going to be a Lierpool player, the young Dutchman was being acclaimed as the best thing to come from Holland in well over a decade. The speculation rose and in the end nothing came of it. Just like the calls before he was spotted in the Wirral looking at houses along with Zidane (where did Ivan go???) So now, the new talking point is our very own Xabi Alonso. I think there is not a true red amongst us that really wants the lad to go but, if he has his mind made up, then he must be allowed to leave. Better and bigger players have left Liverpool FC and the time is coming that this certain midfield General will find patures new with the mighty Real Madrid. The story seems to have dragged on for an eternity and for this writer, I just want the whole episode behind me so that we can work on the Liverpool team for the future. This brings me nicely onto the Real madrid stance and their refusal to pay the asking price for Xabi. The problem is Perez and his stubborness to fashion the deal, perhaps he paid over the odds for Ronaldo? The asking price for Xabi is exactly what any other team would be asking yet Madrid are reluctant to pay the full price and so VDV comes into the equation. I seem to recall that his asking price was about £8 to£10m 5 or 6 6 years ago, perhaps £10m now? I think we will all admit that one of the first things we do when we are linked with a player today is to google and youtube him. Many big names look fantastic on youtube, look at Liverpools version of Rick Parfitt!!! Voronin was a hero prior to joining Liverpool and his time with the club is well expired IMO. But, VdV is a quality player and could give us additional creativity up front. Whether he is the answer to the Alonso saga, only time will tell but for me I think it would be a good time to bring the lad in. £20m + VdV for Alonso, anyone?
sutty Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 Sabre has probably thrown his shirt away now. Insult to injury
whitewidow Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 Early Ajax and Hamburg VDV - YESLate Ajax and Real VDV - no chance
dalennie Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 I would like to see the money for Alonso go towards purchasing David Villa, instead of VDV and perhaps push Stevie back to central midfield roll
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 (edited) VdV = Babel Loads of talent, doesn't have a clue whatto do with it. So, no. Way Edited August 3, 2009 by Macca
Eskimo Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 I'd prefer Sneijder and 15 million. Off to Italy isn't he?
Igors Uncle Dave Posted August 3, 2009 Author Posted August 3, 2009 Look at the whole picture. Xabi wants to go, end of story and it wont change, he has made his mind up but Real are refusing to pay the price. So what do we do? Make a player who does not want to be with us, stay and play? OK he might, if we are luck show somethig like the form of last season but I think we all know where it would go. Alonso would die a death and we would get less that we are asking in January. So then, what do we do? Rafa needs the money for the replacement, it seems obvious that Stadler and Waldorf are not going to produce the goods. If we can not get the £30m we want, what do you think we should do? Yes in an ideal Real Madrid/Chelsea/ Manc world then David Villa would be a fantastic signing but where will the money come from if we can not sell Alsonso. in fact the mention of Villa, even if we did sell Alonso for £25-£30M you woul still need to add another £5 or £10M to that. Villa is a no go. Silva then? Good player and a proven Spanish International. Good with the ball. value? I would say £25m+ This means theat the money from Alonso would go on one player? I dont see that happening.
New York Red Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 Off to Italy isn't he? Loan supposedly. How come we can't get those deals?
Farmer's Tan Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 if alonso goes i think we will be looking at aquilani and hopefully someone like silva, that would be money well spend(at least on paper)
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 Loan supposedly. How come we can't get those deals?we should go for David Villa on loan
Igors Uncle Dave Posted August 3, 2009 Author Posted August 3, 2009 VdV is not much good. Right, well that kind of puts the whole thread to bed then. Glad you cleared it up for us
Rory Fitzgerald Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 Sneijder was the player to take from Madrid if any player was on offer for the swap - to be honest, VdV was low down on my list. There are tons of 'accountants' here who are taking; - the Keane money,- Rafa's early quotes as saying he can affford another player- extra funds from Arbeloa sale- 25-30 ish million from Alonso sale minus Glenn Johnson funds which should leave enough to replace Alonso and still get another decent player in. I just hope we get that extra player along with Alonso's replacement.

Nebraska Red Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 Loan supposedly. How come we can't get those deals? probably has something to do with the crazy wages they get, together with taxes. the climate also has a negative effect on loans from Spain/Italy to the UK. can we compete with a loan period in Milan, Rome or Turin? and don't forget that it's a much harder game in the PL and most of these foreign johnnies are cissies.
goodrobotusses Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 Loan supposedly. How come we can't get those deals? Presumably because we don't want him.

I dont see that happening. Alonso will turn in a great performance this season whether he goes or stays.....because: a) He's a professional, who will always try his best.... b) We've got him by the short and curlies.....it's a world cup year and I think he might well want to play..... Win/Win situation here, no wonder Rafa is playing a blinder..... YNWA
New York Red Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 (edited) we should go for David Villa on loan That's an EXCELLENT idea! I think it's the wave of the future. Edited August 3, 2009 by New York Red

So let's assume that he had 10 million. We then sold Arbeloa and may sell Dossena and Xabi. It is not a stretch to consider that we might have 50 million to spend.
