magneto Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 Allow me to get things back on track: Rafa's back up plan for central midfield?
mally Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 I was really looking forward to page 1,000. think of this as page 631
Keita Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 Apparently Masch has become a father again and will join up with the squad on Thursday now.
New York Red Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 anyone see the article in the echo Tell us girl. What does it say?
Gomez Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 Apparently Masch has become a father again and will join up with the squad on Thursday now. Fair play to Masch and Nando, having kids in the off-season. Maybe Rafa had a point with Xabi
Benzo-13 Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 With Xabi looking to go I'm glad we're keeping Mascherano.I think he's more just far more important to us in the bigger games i.e. Chelsea in the CL.A proper specialist in his position. Anyway names I would consider to step in for our No.14 and considering Xabi's profile when he signed for us would be.Raul Meireles, Miguel Veloso and Ever Banega. Not as metronomic but not many are.The kid from the Olympics Hernanes is very good but AC Milan have probably got first dibs on him by now.
Sion Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 (edited) The kid from the Olympics Hernanes is very good but AC Milan have probably got first dibs on him by now. AC are skint, the Kaka money went off their massive debt. Even without that point, we'd be better proposition at the moment. When i've seen him play he's like a Mascherano (albeit it not as good defensively, but then who is?) with a shot and eye for a pass. So actually not really that much like Mascherano Would make a very good signing me thinks. I'll be gutted if we don't sign him.Rafa has to walk if we don't sign him. Edited July 13, 2009 by Sion
Case Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 What have I missed? There's a definitive statement above ... 'we are keeping mascherano'. Have barca pulled out then? Re: Xabi - an important question ... Say he insists on leaving, but real Madrid only offer £24m take it or leave it. If we leave it, Xabi hands in a formal transfer request. What do you think would Rafa do? (This isn't the same as what would YOU do)?

He'd be my first choice along with Sneijder but like you say seems he's Italy bound.

The Masch situation was more bulls**t posturing for higher wages and he might get it.Give him the dough and he'll stay plus the reason his wife went back to Argentina was to give birth as we found out later.

I agree, but keeping Masch is not for certain yet, we have had no update on this, once he is back trainig hopefully Rafa will get him to say he's staying.

Torres said in an interview just after Spain got beat in the Confed. Cup that he (Masch) loved the place but Xabi was more guarded and he couldn't predict what he'd do.
Stefano Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 Masch is a specialist player but I think he'd be easier to replace than Xabi, who makes us tick. To be fair, they compliment each other perfectly, which is why we should pull out all the stops to keep them both for at least another season.
Case Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 not beyond reach English-based players who might complement Mascherano .... ArtetaJohnson (man City) eh, that's it. Both injury prone. We'll have to look abroad, and uk tax is not currently the footballers friend. I still like Vucinic of Roma, but he's not a pure replacement.

I think Masch is a diamond and covers everyone around him plus he's a f***in lunatic and you can't by that crazy!! Xabi was bought to play a different game to the one that evolved around him. The role he had in 05/06 with Sissoko was the one he was born to play. In his current position he plays as the advanced central midfielder when he should be spreading long balls from in front of the back four.

Rumours are Johnson's problems aren't all to do with injury. Oh silly me, forgetting forum lore. allegedly rumours are Johnson's problems aren't all to do with injury.
Stefano Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 I know he's played that deeper position before but Xabi is at his best in his current role, with a destroyer protecting the back four. He's not the archetypal, dynamic attacking midfielder, but he suits the tactical posession game Rafa employs. Masch does bring a lot to the team but it's a close call between who is the more important. Personally I'd opt for Xabi as I don't think we need a specialist defensive midfielder for the vast majority of games. But like I said, they're the ideal partnership and it's difficult to replace that, and we should stand firm and refuse to sell.

What do you think would Rafa do? (This isn't the same as what would YOU do)? Him handing in a transfer request means nothing if Rafa doesn't want to sell. He has three years left on his contact. Rafa holds all the cards. Personally I would make him stay regardless, as I think we would have a very very good chance of winning the league if we don't disrupt this team. I have no idea what Rafa will do as I have never met the man, let alone discussed the Alonso situation with him.

And if I were to choose between the two, Xabi stays. And if he goes, which I'm still not sure he will, I hope it will cost Real the world, as it will be very costly for us.
Leroy Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 Just Fook Off Madrid, you`ve fleeced us twice before not again. Go on do one.

We either sell and become a selling club or keep Xabi and win the league. I was of the impression LFC existed to win things. Besides keeping Xabi sends a message of our intent to the rest of the league and will help us attract players and get a better price should we choose to sell
