Whitey Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 After seeing that 'Digger' might be off to Tranmere, and then today I got one of those LFC Info newsletters which linked to this free video of the maestro himself...(well worth watching) it made me think... How much would he be worth in today's market? Not forgetting of course good too Aldridge, Rush and Co must have loved playing with him. Alright I'm getting carried away, but you get the point!!!
Falconhoof Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 At his peak, before the knee injury he was among the best in the world. He was better than Kaka running with the ball and he'd be in a group of two players in world football with Messi.

Leo No.8 Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 I was a little bit young for Dalglish in his prime - my first real memories of him were as player-manager at the end of his career so not quite the legendary player he had been at that point. Because of this its between Barnes and Gerrard for the best Liverpool player I've ever seen. Agree Digger would be up there with your Messi's and Kaka's if he were playing today, with a similar value. One of my best mates from school's Dad is close mates with him as well, so I had to honour of meeting him quite a few times growing up and he's a really nice guy as well, the epitome of cool.
BG Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 He today would be a world record fee. He was better at basically everything than Ronaldo is.
fyds Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Apart from heading.I dunno - scored some great headers digger did - like everything else though he made it look so bloody easy.
BG Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 I dunno - scored some great headers digger did - like everything else though he made it look so bloody easy. I have a vague memory that he once complained in an MOTD interview that they would describe his goal that day as a "rare header goal" when in fact he got quite few headers. But yeah, Ronaldo may be better in the air and he may also be better on set pieces but that is it.
Stevie H Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Apart from heading.barnes was f***ing excellent in the air. barnes would be worth 100m today based on ronaldo's fee. just a better player, individually and team-wise.
StevieC Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 But yeah, Ronaldo may be better in the air and he may also be better on set piecesbut that is it. Are you f*cking mad? Where does this myth come from?

I used to have the John Barnes Story on video back in the day. It was filled with footage you rarely see nowadays but that turn he does 1m58s in on the second link in the original post - well it was filled with those. Ronaldo is a cheat, an act, a screen obsessed, stance possessed c***. John Barnes was a genius of a player. But the former will always be more celebrated outside of Liverpool's fanbase because he played in Europe
richwilks Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Loved Barnes. A lot of younger fans only remember the slow bloke who used to stroll around the centre of midfield in the mid 90s. Anyone who saw him in his pomp would mark him as a legend.
fred milne Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 A lot of younger fans only remember the slow bloke who used to stroll around the centre of midfield in the mid 90s.Reckon that phase of his career is still underrated. Slow and strolling he may have been but our passing game went to pot when he was replaced with Ince.
Hassony Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Reckon that phase of his career is still underrated. Slow and strolling he may have been but our passing game went to pot when he was replaced with Ince. Him and Redknapp used to keep the ball between them for 80 of the 90 minutes unfortunately, Babb, James and the rest of the defence used to f*** up in the other 10 minutes
BG Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Are you f*cking mad? Where does this myth come from? I can remember Barnes scoring a good few set pieces but Ronaldo is very good on them - from various angles and distances. Anyway the bottom line is that Barnes was a much better all round player AND was more skilful and exciting to watch than Ronaldo.
Benzo-13 Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 He'd be worth £8000m if today's price is the going rate!
Guy_Incognito Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 A bit* of a cliche, but it's worth mentioning as well that in his day you got a lot less protection, and were more likely to get kicked all over the park. *lot
Knox_Harrington Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Ronaldo scores f***loads though.Think Barnes was the division's top scorer in 1990.
Earl Hafler Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Think Barnes was the division's top scorer in 1990. And never practised his sexual deviances during freekick routines.
