CarraLegend Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 HB and all that but this is just so so wrong. People like him shouldnt age, its just not fair! He's a "veteran" footballer, thats not right.

Lee W Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 (edited) Weird innit'. It's a long time since that goaline clearance.... If he can stay free of serious injury, I reckon we'll get another 5 years of the best from the lad. Edited May 29, 2009 by Lee W

But hopefully we've got plenty of him left yet.
growler Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 liitle fecker shares the day with, is 4 years younger and earns more in a week than i do a year. my ambition was to catch his weekly earning, annually, but every time I get close, he goes and earns a raise. love him really. anyone born today is lovable. :-)
Kvarme Ate My Food Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 HB and all that but this is just so so wrong. People like him shouldnt age, its just not fair! He's a "veteran" footballer, thats not right. I agree. It's horrible and weird that he's 'getting on' in football terms. (a) It seems like 5 minutes since he was a kid, and(b) Whem he gets too old to carry on at his current level, he is irreplaceable
Hassony Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 McAllister was still brilliant at 36, and he was half the player Gerrard is Hopefully we will be able to win 2-3 league titles before he finishes
Kvarme Ate My Food Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 McAllister was still brilliant at 36, and he was half the player Gerrard is hell of a shout, that. not true, either.
Nebraska Red Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 He'll play till hes 40 like maldini only if we move him to center half when he's 35 or 36.
Benitez Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 he's got plenty of years left in him at the very top. And with Rafa as manager, even when SteG loses some of the drive (if he does!), his game will be adapted again, as it was a couple years ago. So here's hoping both stick around for a long time
Malcolm X Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 One the that goes completely unnoticed is how solid we are with Stevie in the side particularly against the big sides. He didnt play against Chelsea and Arsenal and we shipped in 4 goals in both those games.
Chili Palmer Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 hell of a shout, that. not true, either. He's twice the player Gary Mac was when he was 29. Just so happened that Gary Mac got better with age, if Stevie does we are gonna have a great few years.
Dan Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 Scary. However as someone else has said we'll probably see his best 3 years coming up which is pretty mouth watering.
Cam Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 For years now I've been a firm believer that a player's peak years are no longer 28-32 but more like 24-28. The game is so much faster & more athletic these days. In fact that age range is lowering each couple of seasons. Give it 5 years and players will be reaching that 'slowing down, veteran' stage at 24. Gerrard has maybe 2 seasons as the all-explosive, combative, deep partner for Nando before he needs to be looking at a Hamann/Makalele effortless role in defensive midfield or centreback.

He's already doing way less 'work in this role than previously playing box to box, and he has less chasing of lost causes to do than an out and out number 9, it really is a position you can use your head and decide when and where to go. I know they are different type players but such as Zola and Bergkamp played that position well into ther thirties to great effect
MFletcher Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 Aye, Stevie doesn't have to do too much running in his role. He'd have far more to do if he was dropped back into midfield, because he'd inevitably be going forward and then having to leg it back a further twenty yards.

I know they are different type players but such as Zola and Bergkamp played that position well into ther thirties to great effect Its something Rafa mentioned within the first few weeks of joining us, said something along the lines of Gerrard being twice the player he was then (2004) if he could choose his runs better and use his energy better.

I know they are different type players but such as Zola and Bergkamp played that position well into ther thirties to great effectexactly,as mentioned he has a couple of seasons left at his peak where he can run all over the park but thats not what he does anymore anyhow, the position he's in now is one that he can play well into his 30's and still be as good as he is today.
DonRafa Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 exactly,as mentioned he has a couple of seasons left at his peak where he can run all over the park but thats not what he does anymore anyhow, the position he's in now is one that he can play well into his 30's and still be as good as he is today. Then he'll move further back in the team, and still be ace. Brilliant, he is. Fecking brilliant
MarkD Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Felth like YNWA was away so long, I expected this thread to read "Steve Gerrard is 30 today...."
