psl Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 (edited) 86 points, 2 defeats, unbeaten at home, most away victories, most goals scored, best goal difference in the league. And all this without Torres for much of the season. 9/10. Edited May 24, 2009 by psl
psl Posted May 24, 2009 Author Posted May 24, 2009 Chelsea have one more away victory than we do. Knew I should have checked the table!
mathewbet1 Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 These stats seem to blow the theroy 'the best team always wins the league' out of the water. Not fair im gonna sulk.
pipnasty Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 And to think that some people wanted Rafa replaced by Mourinho only a few months ago
carrafan Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 The Mancs won it because of their home form. We need to learn score goals against teams looking to defend at Anfield regularly and progress in that area looked a bit apparent toward the 2nd half of the season. We can kick on from here now and actually be what we havent been in the last two decades. I'm really happy with the season and hope Rafa gets the cooperation he wants in the summer window.

Zoob Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 It is a remarkable season for us, but also something of a freak season all round. Think we're the only top level English team ever to fail to win the league having only been beaten twice. And as mentioned in a previous thread, our points per game total is (I believe) our second highest in the club's history, and is better than what we achieved in 87/88 Can't remember a season where the league winners have been so relentless yet completely un-inspiring. United won 3 more games than we did, but only 12 of their 28 wins were by more than 1 goal (compared to 17 of our 25). Wouldn't be surprised if United's record of 5 points out of 18 against the other big 4 teams is their worst in many many years. Feel really proud, but also incredibly frustrated because putting aside all that crap about the league table not lying, I really believe we were the best team, and the only thing that stopped us winning the league was luck and a few incredibly dodgy points winning refereeing decisions for the Mancs
John am Rhein Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 Interesting to consider the best non-League winning teams: Liverpool 2008/09 would be right up there. Other candidates: Ipswich 1980/81QPR 1975/76Liverpool 1988/89Everton 1985/86Arsenal 2002/03Nottingham Forest 1978/79...
£440,000 Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 Though it doesn't count for much we didn't have a single player sent off all season. That has to be a good thing.
Jim D Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 Though it doesn't count for much we didn't have a single player sent off all season. That has to be a good thing. Not having a single player sent off is quite amazing actually but what is even more amazing is we hit the woodwork the most times this season, 29 times! Have a guess which team scored the most jammy deflected goals? Aye those Manc b*****ds! I think we've been impressive this season but luck certainly has played its part, the Mancs just about got over the line.
Tommok Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 (edited) still can't believe how close we were to winning it this year and it's brilliant to get so close. We have been awesome for large parts of the season, and a big improvement in the league over recent years, but I do believe the table doesn't lie though and we are still not quite as clinical as the Mancs are over a whole season yet. If we don't suffer from injuries to key players next season and we pick up a couple of key signings in the summer I think we could be in pole position next year. I'm confident that if given the right money Rafa can make the signings that help us make the next step up. Edited May 24, 2009 by TommoK
growler Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 agree with most of that, but please stop the 'we deserved it' or 'best team', because the table doesn't lie. all the points made are valid, but iam not satisfied because we didn't win the title. Hopefully the players and club agree with me, that we did well, but not well enough. we need to do better next season. Generally, history suggests that a close title run normally precedes a title win. the pain of just missing out can provide that extra 5% that is the difference.
Raj Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 (edited) We did really well, but it wasnt good enough. And we weren't good enough, despite our best efforts Edited May 24, 2009 by roegahnn
spacemonkey Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 In terms of the woodwork, Stevie hit the post today as well so I believe that makes it 30 for the season. More "fun facts": Sauce
Nerik Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 Dunno if it's been written elsewhere but I think no other team has garnered more than 85pts and not won the league in the 20 team system.
John am Rhein Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 agree with most of that, but please stop the 'we deserved it' or 'best team', because the table doesn't lie. Of course it lies! Just look at it. Where does this "table doesn't lie" nonsense come from?
Hodgson for Chelsea Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 What would be the difference in points if it were still two points for a win would we have been closer? It's clearly the draws that cost us. Next season will be even tougher and I really feel we missed a massive chance this year. Chelsea will have a new man in the job and surely he wont be as bad as Scholari in terms of league form. The mancs went through an awful run of form early on and we should have got ourselves an extended lead. Instead they went to the world club championships still in sight of us and the rest is history. There wont be an Arsenal first 11 as bad as the one this season for a long time me thinks. The competition will step it up next season, the hard work starts now.
John am Rhein Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 It's clearly the draws that cost us. Dunno, turn our 2 defeats into wins and we'd be champions with 92 points.
McBain Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Dunno, turn our 2 defeats into wins and we'd be champions with 92 points. Cept we drew those games and didn't win the title Mancs deserved it
John am Rhein Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Cept we drew those games and didn't win the title No, we lost those games
