Steven Gerrard named Football Writers' Association player of the year

By Sachin Nakrani

• Liverpool captain beats Giggs and Rooney to award

• 'His performances are of the highest quality' says FWA

The Liverpool captain, Steven Gerrard, has been voted the 2009 Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association.

The 28-year-old topped the poll of journalists ahead of Manchester United's Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney to win the accolade, which has been running since 1948.

Gerrard will receive his award at the FWA's gala dinner at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on 29 May.

"Steven's performances this season have been of the highest quality," said FWA chairman Steve Bates. "His drive and desire have underpinned Liverpool's Premier League title challenge and ensured a tight finish to the season.

"Steven is clearly in his prime and quite rightly rated one of the finest midfield players of his generation and the FWA are delighted to honour his contribution to club and country."

Fantastic news. I'm really chuffed for him. I couldn't have said that if it had happened a couple of years back, but he really has matured into a great player and a superb captain both on and off the pitch. In years to come he'll be seen as our greatest ever player IMO.

Some more quotes from the FWA..........

"We are delighted to honour Steven's contribution this season with our prestigous award," said Steve Bates, National Chairman of the Football Writers' Association.

"Steven has had a fantastic season and has so often been the driving force behind Liverpool's forceful challenge for the Barclays Premier League title.

"His passion and desire to send the title race into the closing days of this campaign has underpinned Liverpool's pursuit of Manchester United and he has frequently caught the eye with outstanding performances which have showcased his considerable talent.

"Steven is viewed by the Football Writers who voted as the heartbeat of Liverpool's team and a player who gives everything for the cause.

"He beat off a strong challenge from Old Trafford stars Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand to emerge as a clear winner and he follows a long and illustrious list of British and European footballers to win the vote of the Football Writers."

Fantastic news this, have to say, I find it even more astounding that Giggs was on that shortlist - bizarre that he got anywhere near the players award but being on this one is even stranger.

I'm not going to lost any sleep over it though - just great to have one of our's recognised at long last.

Does seem bizarre doesn't it. Players you can excuse for being a bit thick but journalists, oh hang on a sec.

happy enogh but how Xabi is not even on the list?

how the f*** did we end up being still in contention with 2 games left then? was it all Gerrard?

Xabi is likely to be our player of the season once he turns in his 2 man of the match performances against West Brom and Spurs

I think he is now the player many fans thought he was 4 or 5 years ago.

Even the set pieces are good.

Gerrard + kryptonite = Lampard.

damn those know nothing hacks and their anti-Liverpool agenda

It's bizarre y'know - since the PFA Players' Player of the Year started in 1973/74, just 5 Liverpool players have won it. In the same period, Liverpool players have won the Football Writers' Footballer of the Year 11 times.

Taking Gerrard out of the equation and looking only at out most successful years as a club between 1974 and 1990, our lads won just 4 PFA awards against 10 from the Football Writers. It's the fecking pros who are the know-nothings.

It's not about goals, Mike

Gerrard has played 29 games (1 as sub) and scored 15 in the League this season

Giggs has played 26 (12 as sub) and scored 2

So Giggs is scoring 1 every 13 games, Gerrard 1 every 2 games.

13 > 2 therefore Giggs wins it

Well he was fantastic then, he is even better now. But that's not what you meant is it?
