SkippyjonJones Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I know he has to promote the game but..... NEW YORK (AP) - The top players in Major League Soccer will face English Premier League team and FA Cup finalist Everton FC in July's MLS All-Star game at Rio Tinto Stadium. MLS All-Stars are undefeated in five previous showcases against international competition. 2008 MLS All-Star game •MLS All-Star Game "We are very excited about Everton FC agreeing to be the opponent for the 2009 MLS All-Star Game," MLS commissioner Don Garber said in a league statement. "Everton is an elite European club that features many world-class players, including former MLS standout Tim Howard, who will challenge our unbeaten record against English Premier League teams in the MLS All-Star Game series." Everton, based in Liverpool, has competed in the England's top division for a record 107 seasons and has won nine League championships. The Toffees, as they are known to their fans, advanced to the FA Cup final by defeating Manchester United on penalty kicks and will face UEFA Champions League semifinalist Chelsea FC on May 30. "We are all looking forward to the match in Salt Lake City," said Everton manager David Moyes. "I am sure there will be a lot of interest in the game and it will be a valuable part of our preseason schedule. We always enjoy spending time in America during the summer because the facilities are first-class and there is a warm welcome wherever we go." Everton is led by U.S. national team star Tim Howard, one of the top goalkeepers in Europe and a former MLS standout. "I can't wait to play the MLS All-Stars," Howard said. "I will doubtless know a few of the guys from the U.S. team and I know full well that it will be a real test for us at that stage of our preseason. The fans over there always enjoy watching English teams in action and I'm sure there will be a terrific atmosphere in the stadium." Rio Tinto Stadium, home of MLS team Real Salt Lake, boasts 20,000 seats and will host the league's midseason showcase for the first time.
Andy @ Allerton Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Compared to the American teams, Marine is an Elite Football Club.

Name one..........
Andy @ Allerton Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Arteta, Jagielka, Cahill, Howard, Baines, Lescott are decent players. Of those Arteta and Cahill in a top side could arguably be 'world class'
johngibo YPC Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Arteta, Jagielka, Cahill, Howard, Baines, Lescott are decent players. Of those Arteta and Cahill in a top side could arguably be 'world class' Why have they got to be in a top side to be world class? Depends how you define world class i suppose. I would say a world class player would get in any team/first 16 in the world. They wouldn't
Falconhoof Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I think of it as being the best few players of their generation in a given position. So, world class attacking midfielders...Kaka, Messi, Gerrard, C. Ronaldo, maybe one or two more. But would you put Cahill in that top bracket ?

They wouldn't Agree it all depends on your definitions of the word 'World Class' For me, we've probably only got two - Reina and Torres. But you could also argue that Gerrard, Masch, Alonso, Agger etc. are 'World Class' as well..
Des Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Agree it all depends on your definitions of the word 'World Class' For me, we've probably only got two - Reina and Torres. Ffs come on. Gerrard is a gimme.
John am Rhein Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 But you could also argue that Gerrard, Masch, Alonso, Agger etc. are 'World Class' as well.. Not sure about Agger (yet) but the others - yes. We have the best team in the world so it's no surprise we have several world class players.

Sion Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 So according to Andy; Arteta, Cahill and Gerrard are in the same bracket.
Andy @ Allerton Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Ffs come on. Gerrard is a gimme. I think he's "World class" for sure. But as someone said - it's your definition of what "World Class" actually means.. If it's "Going to get into the best team in the world" - then I think you've got Reina and Torres as pretty much certs at the moment - because they are better than anyone eles (It appears) at this stage. But Gerrard has a lot more competition for his slot - people like Rooney, Ronaldo, Messi, Robinho, Kaka etc. etc. etc. To be honest 'World Class' is probably a stupid phrase anyway.

I love Pepe but he is still not even the best keeper in Spain.
Des Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 (edited) To be honest 'World Class' is probably a stupid phrase anyway. Quickest. Goalpost. Move. Ever. Edited May 1, 2009 by Des
Jarg Armani Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 But you could also argue that Gerrard... How would that argument go? How long would it last?
Andy @ Allerton Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Quickest. Goalpost. Move. Ever. Not really I've always thought the words 'World Class' are a joke anyway.
Nebraska Red Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 so, here's how the selection process went. The MLS guy says "I want rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, s***-kickers and Methodists." His assistant says "You've got to remember that these people in Utah are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons. " MLS guy says. "Get me Everton"
uppsala Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Everton WORLD CLASS players?Expect the d.v.d.out two wks after the m.l.s.game $14.99.
Nebraska Red Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 you can almost see him thinking "oh crap, Fergie's going to kill me for this, and what will me ma say when I get home and little Gary is crying" he really looks like a complete moron busing for a pee.
