MCALLISTER RELISHING ANFIELD RETURN

Paul Hassall 14 May 2009

Seven years on from his Reds farewell, Gary McAllister returns to Anfield tonight admitting he can't wait to perform in front of the Kop once again.

The former midfield star last set foot on the hallowed turf as a late substitute in Liverpool's 5-0 win over Ipswich Town back in 2002.

It brought an end to a short but glorious Reds career and so tonight he will return to action in the Hillsborough Memorial Game relishing the chance to rub shoulders with some of the greatest names from the club's past.

"I can't believe that seven years have passed since that day," said McAllister.

"We were playing Ipswich and the way the fans treated me was special, really special. But then it always was and I feel really fortunate to have had such a special relationship with them.

"I have been back to Anfield quite a few times since then and the atmosphere has been magnificent so to get the chance to pull my boots on again and get out there and play in front of those wonderful fans once again is something I really appreciate.

"When you see the names of some of the players who will be involved that just makes it even more special.

"Kenny and Alan Hansen were two players I really looked up to because they were two Scots playing in a team that I think many of us saw as the people’s team and it was also a side which dominated at home and abroad.

"Then there is Jan Molby, Rushie and Ronnie Whelan – wonderful footballers and absolute legends in their own right.

"And I can remember coming up against Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler and Michael Thomas on many occasions so it will be good to play alongside them for a change.

"There is so much to look forward to so hopefully the game will be a really good one and the fans who come along will be really entertained."

McAllister has more than one reason for accepting Kenny Dalglish's invitation to take part in tonight's match; from paying tribute to the 96 fans who lost their lives at Hillsborough through to a more personal motivation.

"With the money raised going to Marina Dalglish's breast cancer charity that is a fantastic cause so when I got the call from Kenny I was only too happy to help," said McAllister, who lost his wife, Denise, to breast cancer in March 2006.

"The work that Kenny and Marina have done has been absolutely fantastic and I know that they are now working towards having a radiotherapy centre opened in Liverpool and I don’t think it's possible to overstate how important that kind of facility can be.

"Anything at all that can make life easier for those who are suffering from this terrible disease and their families, well it can only be a good thing can't it?

"Travelling the length and breadth of the country for treatment can be a real burden so if Liverpool can have its very own facility then that would be brilliant."

McAllister has nothing but praise for Kenny Dalglish's footballing ability.

He acknowledges that the Scot was one of the finest players of his generation, but when it comes to describing Dalglish the man his words are even more glowing.

"Obviously Kenny was a special footballer and he has the respect of everyone in the game," he said.

"But in the last few years I have got to know him more on a personal level and the thing that always impresses you most about him is how humble he is.

"That's probably one of the reasons that so many people are willing to help his charity, along with the fact that it is such a good cause."

Gary Mac is just a massive, massive legend. I love him to bits.

Just seen on ITV4. That's my night sorted.

Aye, should be a good match.

Although that version of FOAR needs some tweaking
