CarraLegend Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 http://www.setanta.com//uk/Articles/Footba...ons/gnid-48483/ Steven Gerrard is the only non-Manchester United player to be shortlisted for this season’s PFA Player of the Year. Nemanja Vidic is the man who has been most widely tipped for the gong for much of the campaign but the Serbia defender now faces competition from four of his team-mates. Central defensive partner Rio Ferdinand and keeper Edwin van der Sar, both of whom were integral to United’s 11 league games without conceding a goal, are also included. The evergreen Ryan Giggs, who has drawn lofty praise for his displays in the centre of midfield, is joined by last season’s winner Cristiano Ronaldo, who remains joint-top scorer in The Premier League despite not hitting the same heights as last campaign. United also contribute two of the nominees for this season’s Young Player of the Year award in Jonny Evans, an able deputy to both Ferdinand and Vidic, and young Brazilian full back Rafael. Aston Villa’s English duo of Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor are joined by Manchester City’s Stephen Ireland and Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon in the running for the gong won by last year.
Cunny Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 fecking ridiculous if not entirely surprising Vidic and Ferndinand, fair enoughVan Der Sar is not even in the top 6 keepers never mind any playerGiggs has a had a decent season but smacks of he deserves a nomination before he retiresAs for Ronaldo, Jesus wept.
CarraLegend Posted April 14, 2009 Author Posted April 14, 2009 You have to take your hat off to Ryan Giggs PR company, he's started 11 league games and got 1 goal and had about 2 good games with both happened to be live on sky, it's ridiculous. He genuinely shouldnt be in a top 100 let alone top 6! How on earth can it be said he's had a better season than Lampard or Alonso?
Andy @ Allerton Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 What would make it even funnier would be if we could somehow win the league.
CarraLegend Posted April 14, 2009 Author Posted April 14, 2009 VDS is a joke aswell, Reina has been lightyears ahead of him but is always overlook, it seems keeping all these clean sheets suddenly matters yet when Reina does it it doesnt. And Rafael in the young player?! Yeah what a wonderful season with his 9 league starts.
carrafan Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Rafael? Wow. Insua has done more in his season here.
floyd Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Surprised fvckin Jimmy Greenhoff hasn't been nominated
Jim D Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Just goes to show Footballers aren't exactly the brightest bunch...
CarraLegend Posted April 14, 2009 Author Posted April 14, 2009 Disgraceful that Wes Brown has been left out, he's had a wonderful season.
Case Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 It's the PFA though isn't it? Chosen by every player who presumably fills in a form? How much does anyone like filling in forms? Giggs will probably still be nominated in 5 years time by some of these thickos....
Case Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 How Ralph Milne hasn't made the shortlist, Goodness knows....
Swipe Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 That's f***ing priceless!! Reina's had about 3 seasons of barely condeding, yet when VDS does if for 3 months her gets a Player of the Year nod!!
Romario Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Disgraceful that Wes Brown has been left out, he's had a wonderful season.I agree. He should be nominated because he's... errr... Orange! Yep that'll do. The Giggs one is daft as well. Unless he played like Maradona in those 11 games, which he didn't.
Sion Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 (edited) haha it's disgusting but hardly surprisingVDS has been his usual flappy self. Averaged about 1 save every 2 games during 'his' recordGiggs had 2 decent games, but then again he's old, so you must have to times them by 10Ferdinand has been very poor, as has Evans whenever i've watched him.Less said about Rafael inclusion the betterRonaldo to some extent and Vidic are the only ones who belong there Edited April 14, 2009 by Sion
Maldini Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 The deadline for the voting is the end of January which is just ridiculous.
Sion Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 The deadline for the voting is the end of January which is just ridiculous. can players vote for people from their own team?if not the 30 odd mancs will have to vote for Gerrard
Rory Fitzgerald Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Ryan Giggs has undoubtedly played so much marvellous football this season that people should not even dare mention the name Xabi Alonso.
carrafan Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 I'm actually surprised Rooney isnt there in the list. He's been very important to the Mancs.] The deadline for the voting is the end of January which is just ridiculous. If thats the case, we should have seen more Liverpool players in there. We were top till the new year. Gerrard will win it though.
Redkop Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 I just had to check it wasn't written on April Fools day.!
Maldini Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 can players vote for people from their own team?if not the 30 odd mancs will have to vote for Gerrard The votes are already in, that 6 are the 6 with the most votes. I'm actually surprised Rooney isnt there in the list. He's been very important to the Mancs.]If thats the case, we should have seen more Liverpool players in there. We were top till the new year. Gerrard will win it though. We collapsed in December and January. Vidic and Giggs were getting hyped to f*** around then too. It'll be one of them. Probably with VDS rounding off the top 3.
Hassony Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 The deadline for the voting is the end of January which is just ridiculous. you'd think with text votings, internet, emails..etc that they can do the voting in April, I just don't understand why its so early disgraceful that Xabi isn't there
Jim D Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 (edited) Think it also goes to show that even footballers are easily taken in by media hype, Sky etc. They hyped up the Mancs defence when they went on that clean sheet run it seems this has influenced a lot of the votes considering you've got Van de Sar, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evans and Rafael in there. Not looking so pretty now is it? Not sure what Ronaldo has done this season to warrant inclusion and Giggs? Come on give me a break, was it honestly that goal against West Ham at Upton Park that has warrant him his inclusion?? He's barely played all season, making the odd appearance here and there off the subs bench. I'd say the only two who are worthy of recognition are Vidic and Gerrard. Edited April 14, 2009 by Jim D
