psl Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 (edited) Regardless of the merits of selling Keane, its happened and no one has come in. So how are we looking? Torres and N'Gog as out and out strikers. Babel as an option up front. Kuyt to cover up front and right hand side.Gerrard and Yossi to play in the hole.Riera to play left side, Babel and Yossi can play either side. Is this enough do you think? Basically an injury to Torres or Gerrard and we're looking in trouble I'd say. Edited February 2, 2009 by psl
gns Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 We were probably and injury to Torres or Gerrard away from being in trouble anyway - even with Keane. Keane was having litte impact on our games or the squad so Id prefer to have the money back while someone is still willing to pay for it.
Ben 23 Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Babel's big chance as a striker if anything happens to Torres. Or even just when the kid gets rested.
Flasher Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 El Zhar should be used as sub more. Gerrard can play right too, as can Lucas On the plus side, small squads can be quite tight.
Jarg Armani Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Basically an injury to Torres or Gerrard and we're looking in trouble I'd say. This has been the case for a while. would have liked to see a target man or a number 10, gudjohnsen big em or saviola would all have been alright. lennon would have been alright too to be honest.

You say that but we've had our best season in ages and Torres has missed most of it. In fairness, Keane and Pennant didn't do much either so I guess we'll carry on regardless. Just very surprised that we've not brought anyone in.

The above is straw clutching of the highest order. Rafa's failed to fix the Keane problem by not sorting out a replacement.
Florist Cinema Pond Goal Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 We were probably and injury to Torres or Gerrard away from being in trouble anyway - even with Keane. We've been without Torres for a lot of the season and have got through it but have done so by using Keane in the big games - Arsenal, Chelsea and Athletico away. Now even more so we're gambling on the fitness of our stars and the form of our second tier of players and it's of our own making. Unnecessary.

I've said I think we're light and could be in trouble! Let's hope Stevie's bail isn't revoked hey... Edited February 2, 2009 by psl
beejay Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 We have enough options. The main thing now is that we won't be distracted by all the Keane-circus media and Gerrard will play as 2nd striker for the rest of the season instead of centre midfield. It's also a chance for Rafa to throw the challenge down to Babel, Benayoun & Ngog - they will get more playing time and it's up to them to prove themselves.
Jarg Armani Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 You say that but we've had our best season in ages and Torres has missed most of it. i know, but i don't think anybody would say torres missing most of the season has helped. we would be about 14 clear if you add last season's torres to this year's team. we've all been waiting for a few months for him to be fit and firing, fingers crossed he is now, and can score a lot of goals.

Agreed. He shouldn't be allowed to play for Spain ever again.

I thought you were looking on the bright side - which won't exist if Torres gets injured and Gerrard in another scrap.... All other pliers simply aren't good enough for the premier league let alone LFC
Sion Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 The way i'm looking at is Keane has done so little this season it's hardly worth panicking that we're now short of strikers. Babel/N'Gog/Nemeth/Pacecho can't do any worse than he did, so we're possibly £19m up but with a no worse squad

The player might have recovered some more form and given us something for the rest of the season, as in the glimpses at Arsenal, v Bolton, v Albion, the money in the bank certainly wont. Yep we are very light in the attacking sense. Not only do we need two players to stay fit for the remaining perhaps 20 odd games, but at least two others to play better for longer periods than they've so far managed or seemed capable of.

He never really got a chance to play with Torres either. Would have been nice to see Keane behind Torres with Gerrard on the right of the three, just once. Primarily I'd always want Gerrard behind Torres but we could have given it a go on one occasion! I'd have taken Bent as cover for Torres. Edited February 2, 2009 by psl

Babel/N'Gog/Nemeth/Pacecho can't do any worse than he did, so we're possibly £19m up but with a no worse squad aye! Considering we play 1 up front, we have 4 forwards in the squad in Torres, Babel, Kuyt and Ngog, is it really that s****? Yes if Torres gets injured, but what did having Keane do to improve that situation? Nothing.
Mcghinty Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 That's idiotic. Well if you are happy with standard of football from babel, Kuyt, Ngog, Dossena etc then good luck to you....

I know our squad is light in some peoples eyes, but Torres, Gerrard, Kuyt, Ngog, Babel and Dossena is surely the smallest squad in world football.
Florist Cinema Pond Goal Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 aye! Considering we play 1 up front, we have 4 forwards in the squad in Torres, Babel, Kuyt and Ngog, is it really that s****? Yes if Torres gets injured, but what did having Keane do to improve that situation? Nothing. How many times did Keane play up top with Gerrard behind and how did we do in those games? Would you have Kuyt in ahead of Keane as the 1 in a 4-2-3-1? Would you rather have N'gog over Keane on the bench? We've got a good price for him but where else are the positives here? The media focus of him sitting on the bench will be gone but now we can look forward to his name being ventured by journalists each time we struggle to score.
David Hodgson Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 This is a f*ck up, but we're used to this from the club now. Robbie Keane was worth the money when we bought him, few doubted that. He isn't suddenly a player beyond redemption, and there is no doubt whatsoever that he might yet have significantly contributed on the run in. He remains a striker of the highest calibre, albeit one not one on form, and his sale is only a negative in terms of the rest of our season. If we knew we might take money for him why did we think £3.5m a bit rich for Heskey, or zero (for now) too much to speculate on someone like Joe ? His value was not going to evaporate over the next 3 months, and as a club we are gaining absolutely nothing from this move.

I am sorry I did not list all the players in the squad I didn't think I had to the fact is that we are far too light up front with far too many less than average pliers (IMO) in the squad. If we lost the top 2 then we are no better than west brom going forward. 0-0 draws here we come....
