Flight Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 I hate him. I love him. I hate him. I love him. I hate him. I love him. Anything resembling a 4 4 2 and I wonder why we ever bought him, but on the right in 4 2 3 1 when we are firing, the bloke is immense. Unsung hero again yesterday; there aren't many players in the country that could keep A Cole in their pocket for 90 mins, but Dirk did just that. For the first time this season our best eleven is playing together and firing. Arbeloa, Aurelio and Skrtel are back. I don't know why, but it always takes Aurelio a couple of mediocre games to get back into it, but he was back to his best yesterday. Our full backs staying fit is key to the rest of the season. We will push on from here. Just, please Rafa, no more 4 4 2. We don't have the players for it. Our best players in our best formation. And Kuyt will win us all over, again, on the right.
Kvarme Ate My Food Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 he's boss, but he has to improve his crossing. Failed to clear the first man several times yesterday.
Swipe Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 His crossing was awful yesterday. He can be awful or immense, but Gullit did make one good point yesterday. Kuyt always has discipline and always sticks to his job, even though he's been brought up as a striker. Wouldn't mind seeing Benni get more games out wide against weaker opposition though, when we don't need Dirk's muscle as much
Ste M Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Cole must hate playing us because he knows that he's going to end up being pinned back and being under pressure for 90 minutes. Dirk can be ridiculously good in the 4-2-3-1, as bad as he can be in a 4-4-2. he should never play on the right in the 4-4-2.
Roscoe Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 when watching the match I confess I get massively irritated by him at times - his touch, his crossing, his one speed have me tearing my hair out....but when you analyse what he does in the cold light of day you have to love him. he effectively nullifies the whole opposition left flank on his own, creates space and time for our right back, gerrard and torres and generally gives us an extra man in defence, midfield and attack. all at once. think he could be used more selectively though, as much to preserve his phenomonal energy levels as to afford us more creativity against less threatening sides.

You can't underestimate Kuyts contribution, but he was poor with the ball yesterdayI would start Benny in more games the way he is playing. Not at Everton, were Kuyt is needed, but at places like Pompey on Sat
billybunter Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 best player off the ball, one of the worst on it I love Dirk. I just wish he had a bit of pace in him.

Ben 23 Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 He wasn't very good at all yesterday. His first 20 minutes was probably the worst I've seen a proffesional footballer play. He got a bit better but was still our weak link in attack and every counter attack was ended/slowed down dramatically when he became involved. His form has really dropped off after a great start to the season. Still hope we can sign a good right winger before 17:00 and Dirk can take Keane's role (which he rarely played) as back up striker. Expect the usual replies though from the usual suspects.

Stevie H Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Yea. Good one. 1 pt for Stevie H.whatever. bell.

johngibo YPC Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 an unnecessary exaggeration which makes it easy to dismiss aything worthwhile you might say. at times though, kuyts touch and use of the ball was lower league. exactly, a decent argument apart from that. But why stupidly exaggerate. He wasn't even the worst player on the pitch
Redwire Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Dirk's crossing was poor yesterday but he gave Cole a torrid time and was still involved in both goals.
Knox_Harrington Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Was a great touch for the opener but he was poor going forward on the whole.
Dan Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Was a great touch for the opener but he was poor going forward on the whole. How was he involved in the opening goal?
Swipe Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 How was he involved in the opening goal? Nice cushioned touch to Gerrard, who then swept it out to Aurelio
McBain Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 I like him as a striker but hate him as a midfielder
Woodsyla Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Was a great touch for the opener but he was poor going forward on the whole. So was Cole, and watching Chelsea this season they are at their most dangerous when the fullbacks provide their width, we snuffed that out yesterday and rendered Chelsea toothless. His delivery wasn't the best but he was still a threat and Cole wasn't. Great job IMO.
Tommy Cockles Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 A triumph of work rate over ability. Some incredibly frustrating poor touches, embarrassingly woeful passing and staggeringly inept "crosses" I should hate him. However when someone works that hard, for that long and with such total and utter commitment and is 100% for the club and the support you have to love him. That said he wouldn't be in my first 11, but then after all I am just a punter.
D.Boon Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 i thought our wide play was poor yesterday. You know what you are going to get with Kuyt though. Riera is my main concern. Seems a class fella but I'm still not convinced by him yet as a long term first choice. He can totally disappear from games and his one footed-ness is staggering as showed with that ridiculous flick yesterday when through on goal.
