Craig Burley's Book of Co-Commentating on Liverpool Games

1. If a challenge looks 50-50, it is definitely in favour of the other team

2. If a referee awards Liverpool a free kick, he is wrong

3. If a referee awards the opposing team a free kick, he has 'got it spot on' (use these actual words)

4. If a referee misses or fails to award Liverpool a free kick/penalty, he has 'made a good call there' (use these words too)

5. If a referee misses or fails to award the opposing team a free kick/penalty, he has 'made a big mistake there'

That's it. Good luck. And remember, Setanta probably pay well for this 'expertise'

He's comical. I can't work out whether he winds me up or makes me p*ss myself laughing.

In our game against Stoke last week, if the statistician had been following Burley's commentary it would have read Fouls Committed: Stoke - 0, Liverpool - 42.

And we had most of the possession!

I remember him commentating on the Newcastle game earlier in the season where Beye was sent off. He was more furious than Beye himself, and then started arguing with Graham Poll in the studio saying it was never a penalty and no one other than Poll would say that. They then asked the fans in the studio (1 from every team i think) and at least 60% said it was a pen :D

No idea how this idiot managed to get that job, but you could say that about a few others too.

the saddest thing about Burley is that he is so obviously modelling himself on Andy Gray

from his turn of phrase to his exagerated voice (the one were Gray sounds like he's having a sh!te)

I think setanta saw that Gray proved to be a success at Sky and they thought that they had to have a scottish voice

at least gray was a decent player in his time, and he does come up with decent points every now and then, this guy is a complete muppet, who else would come up with s**** like "this is a victory for football" when vidic scored the winner against sunderland

He's a total f-ing t***.

On the penalty last night he said, in order:

"The defender hasn't tried to play the ball there at all."

(5 secs later) "It would have been a soft call."

(3 secs later) "The ref made a good call."

He's an idiot.

He's f***ing woeful. What does he actually offer as a commentator? About a month ago he was saying that Alonso would be the one who was left out all the time and it was unfortunate for him because he was a good player. Without a hint of shame, he changed that to Keane last night and kept quiet about his previous assertion.

Man's an idiot.

Her indoors told me to turn the sound off last night because he was irritating me so much. I cannot believe how such an unintelligible, unfathomable, halfwit can get a job commentating. I can only assume he's got something on one of the Setanta bosses. There really isn't any other reason you'd give him the job.

Setanta is absolute garbage. Why can't at least one channel get it right? Enough of the sensationalism and inarticulate platitudes, how about some pundits who can speak eloquently, have a modicum of intelligence and perhaps even some in-depth knowledge of the game? Why do the networks think we want two-bit former players/managers who aren't talented enough to remain in the game and fit only to trot out tired clichés and regurgitate tabloid nonsense? I want to be able to watch previews/analysis etc, but it only serves to infuriate/bore me. I'm sure more people would enjoy Sky, for example, as a result.

I don't think McManaman's that bad as a pundit. I didn't mind Gary Speed either. Tim Sherwood's a lost cause.

Angus Scott is also quite a bit better than Dicky - who is an embarrassment to TV 'personalities' everywhere.

Totally. It makes me squirm.

If you listen to him and the commentator, they've even got a bit of schtick going on, whereby Burley is made out to be a grumpy, tell-it-how-it-is bad ass who's hard to please.

It's horrendous!

Tim Sherwood is a f***ing plank as well. Setanta really are dreadful.

the biggest selling paper in britain is the s*n. the football coverage is tailored to its audience. sad, but there you go.

Not for that much longer though. I think the Mail is due to overtake them in a couple of years if circulation trends continue.

Burley even copies Gray's absurd 'elder statesman' way of calling everyone 'son,' as if he's 60 years old and drinking Bobby Charlton's bio-friendly yoghurts every morning with one hand in his pocket and the dog scratching at the door - he only retired from playing four years ago! And the main commentator Jon Champion was even more irritaing, sounding extraordinarily smug whenever anything went wrong for us and describing the bluenoses as 'honest as the day is long'. (And that strikingly 'impartial' query about Rafa: 'Tell me, Craig: did Rafa say those things about Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United for strategic reasons, or was he just being silly?') I just hope another pair cover Sunday's match.

I particularly liked the bit where he launched into a speech about shielding the ball when it runs out for a goal kick. About how terrible and stupid it was and how, anywhere else on the pitch that would be a foul, its insane etc.

Wonder how many matches he's had to wait for it to happen where a Liverpool player was doing the shielding? Can anyone recall him launching into one during any other games where different players were involved?

Thought not.

The guy is the baddest mong on tv.

Against Stoke he was almost in tears that we were playing 4-5-1 "How many of the other title chasing clubs would play with 1 up front here?" (ignoring that United did exactly that the other week, as did Chelsea and Arsenal earlier in the season), and he was apoplectic that Keane was on the bench. As the game dwindled to it's inevitable conclusion, he started banging on about playing 4-4-2 with Keane up front when Torres was fit again, with Gerrard back in central midfield "where he was best".

Do you know what he said during the game on Monday? If you don't, I'll tell you:

"I don't understand why Rafa has gone back to the 4-4-2 now, okay Torres is fit again, and Keane should be playing, but why change it now?" (or words to that effect).

Then when Rafa took Keane off, he hammered him for changing formation (even though he didn't) and hammered him for taking Keane off.

At least he didn't mention his zonal marking views, that would have had you all in stitches.
