Bobby Wilcox passed away last night in the Royal Hospital. He had only very recently been diagnosed with cancer, and his family were with him at the bedside. He was sixty years old.

For those reading this who did not know him you have missed one of the greatest characters that this city has produced. For those that have met him the loss will be deeply felt.

Whether he was sitting in the Globe giving out tickets and stick with equal generosity, or haranguing late-comers in stations, airports or hotels, or belting out such classics as the Johnny Barnes song, he was always brilliant. Perhaps his finest hour was in the airport after Istanbul, as he kept thousands entertained with many a Kop classic, including teaching them the new version of ‘We Won It Five Times.’

He was a very generous man. Like a latter day Shankly, he was always inundated with ticket requests, and always felt badly he if could not come up with the tickets that had been asked for. To this day no-one knows for sure whether the club ticket office phoned him while we were on the train to the European Cup semi-final with Chelsea, and asked him if he had any spares!

At this time I’d ask that your thoughts go out to his wife, Mary, children, Sheila, Lisa, Michael and Colin and his beloved grand-children.

If Bill Shankly was Liverpool’sgreatest manager, and Kenny Dalglish Liverpool’s greatest player, then surely Bobby Wilcox was the club’s greatest supporter.

God bless you Bobby, and thanks for everything. You are, and always will be, a legend.

For those who go the match, you WILL know Bobby's face, even if you didn't know him personally. Will be sadly missed.

There's a picture of him on the Red All Over The Land site, mate.

See the thread on him on there.

ps the site is down at the moment. In all honesty, it's probably because it's battered with people trying to pay their respects to him.

Met him a few times in the globe but didn't know him personally. He was a great character though and meant a lot to those who knew him.. Sad news.

Some of my longest lasting memories of the match come from Bobby Wilcox et al. Will never forget the Liverbird they did at Highbury back in the mid 80's, fortunate enough to end up in the same carriage on a train back from Southampton where we got the full song book. He was a great red, the club obviously brought him a lot of joy. He will be sorely missed, they've stopped making Reds and scousers like him. RIP.

The Globe were shocked when they heard he had cancer. Got text off a mate last night to say he'd passed awy. Was only given 4 weeks max about a week ago.

I know quite a few who knew him very well.

Just want to pay some respects to the club on this one

They put a great tribute on the official website

http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/drilldown/a...0116-1719.shtml

And George played his favourite song at half time on Monday

Its the funeral today, Ben YPC just text me saying the flags are at half mast at Anfield, and that Rick Parry and Carragher are both at the funeral. I believe they have arranged for the hearse to do a lap of the ground on the way to the crematorioum

Oh and Ben said they had to make the funeral all ticket cos so many wanted to go and they were worried about certain people not getting in!! Who ever heard of an all ticket funeral???!!
