anny road Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 is it me or have they improved no end? we dont seem to be hitting the first man as much and there is more movement i know Newcastle were w***, but I thought we were better v Bolton
gns Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 agreed, but it wasnt gonna be hard to improve our corners was it?
anny road Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 true but it is good if we are wroking hard on the training ground, which it looks like against Bolton Riera scored with a flick after a front post run, Sami did the same today and it was cleared off the line
abc Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 I think Gerrard's deliveries have been superb recently, and have gradually improved since slightly before this time last year. And having Sami back in the team makes a big difference. Agger is a threat too. Hope i'm not wrecking your thread dave, but digressing very slightly, the more corners I see being conceded due to poor man marking (Stoke goal against West Ham), the more I cannot understand why everyone does not mark zones on corners. And then they have the cheek to criticise us for doing that. Also, do we also now consistently adopt a hybrid marking system where the line of 4/5 in front of the keeper is zonal, and then afterwards players pick their man and mark them?
Stevie H Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 we do seem to have stopped hitting the front man so much, which is a massive leap forward. they're showing a lot more thought and planning in general, couple of driven balls to the near post for riera's goal against bolton and sami's off the line yesterday, mixed up with some deeper far post ones and the odd one to the edge of the box. good to see.
Benitez Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 Good to see Lucas taking corners as well, even when SteG is playing. He takes a decent corner.
Jarg Armani Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 Having Sami to aim at is the main difference in my opinion.
anny road Posted December 29, 2008 Author Posted December 29, 2008 Having Sami to aim at is the main difference in my opinion. that and an improvement in our movement i think
Jarg Armani Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 It makes things so much more unpredictable having sami there. We give the opposition something to think about if we do 'swing it into the mixer', which means when we do try something different it catches them off guard a bit. Riera's goal for example was from exactly the kind of near post delivery that gets so much stick. I've often said that this is one of the areas in which we lag behind united and chelsea, a goal threat from centre back, specifically someone who can head corners into the net. For me Agger has flattered to decieve a bit on the goalscoring side, and his run forward and shot is in danger of becoming the new Riise free kick. Always bugs me how hilarious everyone seems to find Carragher's scoring record too.
Chili Palmer Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 its all to do with good delivery, Stevie is now putting good ball after good ball in.
Jarg Armani Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 its all to do with good delivery, Stevie is now putting good ball after good ball in. Don't buy it. He hasn't just learned how to strike a dead ball has he?
Chili Palmer Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 Don't buy it. He hasn't just learned how to strike a dead ball has he? of course not, but he can improve on everything and anything. Look at his pens. Corners are ALL about delivery imo.
Knox_Harrington Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 Don't buy it. He hasn't just learned how to strike a dead ball has he?Agree. His delivery may have improved a smidgeon but as you say having Hyypia gives you the option of the percentage corner, "hit this big fella who tends to win his header" exactly the type of corner Lampard has specialised very well in. Then you vary around that and, yep, a bit of better movement also pays dividends.
Stevie H Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 of course not, but he can improve on everything and anything. Look at his pens. Corners are ALL about delivery imo.not true. player movement, timing of runs and having someone who is simply really good in the air are all factors.
sutty Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 not true. player movement, timing of runs and having someone who is simply really good in the air are all factors. I think delivery is the most important factor though Look at Gary Mac for example
Ibby Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 I think delivery is the most important factor though Look at Gary Mac for example agree with that. Its no point having someone like sami in the box when all you do is hit the first defender
Chili Palmer Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 not true. player movement, timing of runs and having someone who is simply really good in the air are all factors. All factors yep, not as big a one as the delivery. a good example of this is the Newcastle goal yesterday, Edgar never had to move. I'm sure there are many examples of movement, timing of runs and a good headers of course but the delivery is the one area that the defense can do nothing about.
Knox_Harrington Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 agree with that. Its no point having someone like sami in the box when all you do is hit the first defenderIt's a lot easier to take a corner though when you have someone like Sami to hit. Likely to win his header, likely to head it well means you don't need to ping it in hard and flat like Beckham used to and can give it more loop like Lampard.
Jarg Armani Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 Look at Gary Mac for example And he's on the dole. What does that tell you?
Stevie H Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 All factors yep, not as big a one as the delivery. a good example of this is the Newcastle goal yesterday, Edgar never had to move. I'm sure there are many examples of movement, timing of runs and a good headers of course but the delivery is the one area that the defense can do nothing about.you said 'ALL' about delivery. you can have the best delivered ball in the world but if nobody's taking up the positions or making the right runs then it goes to waste. it's actually pretty rubbish that our only real credible threat from corners is sami.
carrafan Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 Always bugs me how hilarious everyone seems to find Carragher's scoring record too. He doesnt even go up for corners when he plays fullback.
Chili Palmer Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 you said 'ALL' about delivery. you can have the best delivered ball in the world but if nobody's taking up the positions or making the right runs then it goes to waste. it's actually pretty rubbish that our only real credible threat from corners is sami. I didn't mean it literally. Agree about only having Sami tho.
Knox_Harrington Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 Agree about only having Sami tho.So we are significantly more dangerous because Sami is playing then.
Chili Palmer Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 So we are significantly more dangerous because Sami is playing then. no, just agreeing that Sami is by far our best header of the ball, in both boxes.
Andy @ Allerton Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 Our corners in the last few games have been astonishing compared to the crap we've had for nearly 15 years. If we can actually put pressure on sides (for a change) from corners - then that will be a massive boost for us.
