Maldini Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 The People is saying he's signing for £9m and already been shown around Melwood. Not sure about this, good going forward but he tends to switch off. I wonder if the rumours of Arbeloa wanting out last summer are true.
Swagger Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Good player, and we need another RB since Degen seems to be broken. The competition would be good for Arbeloa, but 9m is a lot of money.
psl Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 This rumour really seems to be picking up. He's not played for Portsmouth recently.
Rimbeux Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Are we selling Dossena to finance it or something?
Redkop Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 This rumour really seems to be picking up. He's not played for Portsmouth recently. That's because he has an ankle injury.
Swagger Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 This rumour really seems to be picking up. He's not played for Portsmouth recently. Isn't he injured? Are we selling Dossena to finance it or something? I would assume so.
Nerik Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 (edited) 9m is way too much. Arbeloa is doing a very good job so unless he wanted out I would not be looking at buying a player with such a price tag but a more reasonably priced understudy if it is now assumed that Degen will never make it. Johnson seemed to start his career very well but he kind of fizzled out. To be honest I have not followed him much since his move to Pompey. Edited December 28, 2008 by Nerik
LeeRadford Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Good player, and we need another RB since Degen seems to be broken. Is he still in his warranty period or does anyone know where the receipt is?
yellow jumper Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 good signing. can still improve defensively, but he's been one of the best right backs in the league this season.
Nate. Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Reckon Johnson is a decent player myself, and possibly could be better all round than Arbeloa. I'd happliy see him come in to offer more depth. If Dossena goes Arbeloa could offer us great cover at LB too.
McBain Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Haven't seen Pompey much at all this season but i can say he's been outstanding for me in my ff team Get him in Rafa!

Nerik Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 He'd better be for such a price. 9m is a lot for a fullback.
psl Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 That's because he has an ankle injury.Or so we're told...
Benitez Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 9M for Glen Johnson, holy crap. Johnson and Heskey Why spoil things when they are going so well.
John am Rhein Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Potentially a good player, but likely to be the weakest link - to begin with at least. 9 million sounds a lot for him.
jfogarty Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Id say most of the potential fee could be offset by what they may owe us from Crouch.
gns Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Id say most of the potential fee could be offset by what they may owe us from Crouch. Agree with that. They will have paid the first installment but a fair wedge will remain. We agree to write that off and get Johnson for it.
carrafan Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Id say most of the potential fee could be offset by what they may owe us from Crouch. Fair point. A secondary reason why we might be looking at Glen Johnson is because he's English. We've had problems getting enough English players for the CL and it was always thought that the league is moving to a quota system. Johnson was fantastic last season, good going forward and was very good defensively when we played them. 9 million seems to be a bit too much but thats the going rate for a good lcoal player these days. Would be a shame for Arbeloa whose been very good for us this year though but thats what a squad is and he'll need to fight it out with Glen to make the position his own. Also removes the need to buy another left back to replace Dossena as Arbeloa can fit right in there when Johnson is on the right. Has Aurelio been offered a new contract?
kick316 Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Am I the only one who rates him? Whenever I see Portsmouth (admittedly not a lot though) he has been excellent. Better than any of our FBs going forwards and solid enough defending. Having said that 9m is a lot though.
Alonso Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 £9m is still £9m no matter where it's coming from and it does seem a lot for a full back....unless he's gonna be played RW?
KD07 Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 I always thought he was quality at West Ham. Kinda lost his way a bit thereafter but seems to be picking it up. Good player, overinflated price *if true*.
Tones Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 £9m is still £9m no matter where it's coming from and it does seem a lot for a full back....unless he's gonna be played RW? Yeah whether or not they owe us money it still costs us |£9m. Besides the Crouch money has probably already been spent elsewhere. Really does seem to be picking up this rumour. Apparently Pompey fans have been saying this for a while. Was highly rated when he went to Chelsea and seems to be getting good reviews this season, but not sure if we need him, or if its the position i would address first.
Murphman Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 The collapse of the £ against the Euro makes English players a lot cheaper and better value, Platini's shennanigans over foreigners and quota's notwithstanding. Johnson is a very good player certainly from what I've seen better than Dossena, if we do anything remotely close to a like for like I'd be delighted. Arbaloa can play left back as well BTW.
swano Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 I think he would be a very good addition. I'd be surprised if we had to pay 9m for him though. That figure has probably been plucked from nowhere to try and make the story more credible.
