Wilbur Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Story here If my memory is correct, Carra played in quite a few matches as a holding midfielder before going back into defense, and Gerrard played a few games in defense before resuming play in the midfield. Jamie recently said that it is much harder for a young player today to break into the team, and the starts he and Gerrard had seem to support that - they were pretty good footballers, so Roy or GH put them into the match wherever there was a weak spot, in the knowledge that there wasn't much to lose by doing so. I can't see Rafa doing that this season.
johngibo YPC Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Carra did indeed start off as a holding midfielder. Scoring on his debut gave a false impression of what was to come! Gerrard played his first game in central midfield, but yes played right back a fair few times in his early days. Your second point is an interesting one. Gerrard clearly would have made it through at any point in Liverpools history, but would Carragher get an opportunity now??

Doubtful if a young Carra would have got a look in ahead of Masch, Alonso or Gerrard. He started out as a striker in the local youth leagues as well didn't he? 4 goals in 548 games would suggest he made the right move going back in defence Edited December 12, 2008 by Boca
Gunga Din Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Doubtful if a young Carra would have got a look in ahead of Masch, Alonso or Gerrard. perhaps not, but he had enough talent to make it at a top club away from Liverpool. how many players who have come through the acadamy since carra and Gerrard have made it big at another top club? if they are good enough they'll make it

The academy structure across the entire league has to be looked at really. It's not working and less and less players are making the breakthrough. It's not a problem that's only affecting Liverpool but almost all of the big clubs. Edited December 12, 2008 by Boca

DazzlaJ Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 (edited) s*** wrong thread, well done Carra Edited December 12, 2008 by DazzlaJ
