Babel fails in Ajax loan move bid

Liverpool winger Ryan Babel has failed in his attempt to engineer a loan move back to his previous club Ajax.

The 21-year-old arrived at Anfield for £11.5m in July 2007 but has failed to hold down a regular first-team place.

His agent Winnie Haatrecht said: "Ryan sits on the bench too much, he wants to play more and asked me to see if Ajax were interested in a temporary return.

"After we got an enthusiastic reaction from Ajax, we asked Liverpool but the club don't want to see him go."

Babel has made 17 appearances this season but has started just two Premier League matches with manager Rafael Benitez preferring to use him as an impact substitute later in games.

The Dutchman scored the winning goal as Liverpool beat Manchester United 2-1 at Anfield earlier in the season, but he has found his opportunities limited since the arrival of Spanish winger Albert Riera in the summer.

However, despite his apparent eagerness for regular first-team football, Haatrecht maintains his client is happy to stay at Liverpool.

"Rafael Benitez finds Ryan too important. Hopefully we will see that in more playing time," he told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

"Let's be clear - Ryan feels great at Liverpool, but for him to develop further he needs to get playing time."

I tried to warn ye about him :hmm: and all ye did was scorn ;)

we need to break him now - run the legs of him in the reserves and then sell him to Acc Stanley next year

Well yossi started the last two games after his comments about needing to play more, maybe Babel will start the next two games now!

would sooner perservere with Babel than Benyoun - right now its a no brainer - move Kuyt to Striker (target man for Keane) and Babel to Kuyts RA position

this ain't going to make Rafa any happier with him is it.

Don't see why. Shows he is hungry to play, and not looking for a permenant move away

I'd be more worried if he was happy with his current situation

Agree, think I'd feel the same if I were in his clogs. I absolutely do think he does need to play more to develop.

I'd like to see him given more opportunities on the right of midfield and up front in Torres' absence personally. His form hasn't been great but when you have a player with raw ability sometimes you have to persist through poor form to see them fulfil their potential.

Most young forwards and wingers find themselves in a similar situation as Babel is currently. They need to find their confidence and form and learn by being on the pitch and playing.

Maybe he'd be better off proving his worth in training and when he gets on the pitch rather than having his agent blabbing in the papers?

Rafa seems quite traditional in the way he wants his players to prove they are hungry

He should be playing more often.

But his attitude seems to be proper s***.

If Kuyt wasn't playing regularly he'd probably test dangerous terminal disease vacines and spend the rest of the time running marathons for charity.

I can understand him not starting as he's rarely proven his worth over 90 minutes. But there have been more than a few games this season where his big a*** has been warming the bench when we've been crying out for a sub. Or a sub's been made and it's not been him (see N'Gog recently).

Given his success last season from the bench that surprises me. I reckon going to the Olympics against club wishes really pissed Rafa off

Whats strange is that he would consider a loan move in january when he has got a chance of winning the title in england!

He's got the brains of a rocking horse that lad.

He still has an important role to play in my opinion. At his best he offers us a lot of things that we often miss. The problem is that apart from the opening 45mins against Pompey and another couple of glimpses we are yet to see him on fire this season. His chance will come but he needs to be right mentally.

also known as "pulling a Bogarde".

Considering his pace and ability to beat a player I'm very surprised Rafa doesn't utilise him more than he has this season. I can only assume his attitude in training leaves something to be desired.

Babel has everything you want in a world class player.. pace, height, strength and a bit of vision but not in the pass. If he gets his mind right we could still have a pretty good player in our hands.

Remember Rafa mentioning something about Ryan not being able to do what he does when he comes on as an impact sub for the whole of 90 minutes. Maybe his stamina levels are a bit of a problem.
