really enjoyed watching him on saturday. realise it's only one game and he wasn't up against ronaldo or anything but the lad looked really comfortable on the ball, smart positionally and happy getting forward. does his inclusion at dossena's expense point to a pecking order change and a shipping out of dossena in january? or would that be to read too much into it just yet?

I reckon we should read quite a bit into it, especially considering Rafa's decision to drop Dossena straight after his much improved display against WHU.

Bascombe wrote that Dossena is on the way out, and although Bascombe is not as reliable as he used to be, I think that its pretty fair to assume that if a reasonable offer is received, Rafa will not hesitate to ship out Dossena this January; Rafa has already shown that he is not scared to admit to mistakes in the transfer market.

Is Insua good enough cover for the fragile Aurelio? Not sure yet. I hope so, and his showing against Blackburn was very encouraging, but we will only know after a few more games for the first team. I expect he'll get another run out against PSV tomorrow.

He's more "solid" than the others. Always ensuring he doesn't make any technical mistakes but I think he's still got a long way to go to match Aurelio's pace, crossing and impact.

The lad needs game time and that doesn't mean reserve team either.

i'm not advocating him starting ahead of aurelio yet, was just really good to see a kid come in and have a decent game. wouldn't say that pace is particularly one of aurelio's strengths by the way.

Me neither.

The real question is... was he better than Warnock? I'd say honours about even.

Warnock was done by Yossi for the 2nd goal. Insua was very impressive, I was a bit concerned when the team was announced but he had a cracking game.

I just wonder if Rafa is now thinking of easing in some of the youngsters, with the report about Hammill being recalled as well.

why is that "the real question"?

Warnock is very average, was never good enough for us or any top team, Blackburn is about his level

Let's not get carried away here. He played okay going forward but how many such "defenders" have we had in the past that you could say that about? We seem to know of a production line of such players good going forward but can't defend so let's wait until we see him against top class opposition before we organise that open-topped bus ride shall we?

Emerton is a decent international winger

and I always though Riise was a better defender than he was given credit for, his main problem was his distribution( once the goals dried up)

Also Warnock is 27 and unlikely to improve whereas Insua is still just 19 with huge potential to get better and better.

Or that Insua isn't eligible for midweek, whereas Dossena is, and we don't need anymore injuries?

The more i think about it, the more odd it seems. Was Rafa selecting Insua because Dossena had a knock and wanted to keep him fit for midweek ? Seems odd to select Insua knowing he can't play the next game.

Anywho, i hope he plays against Hull. He's got potential but needs games. At Arsenal he'd have been given more starts. " Where are Arsenal in the league ? " comes the reply from those who hate criticism but you look at Clichy and he was given the confidence of the manager - 20 odd appearances in his debut season at 18. They paid £250,000 for him. Unreal.

Why would you not select Insua because he can't play the next the game?

It's called easing him in, not chucking him in and telling him to sink or swim.

I thought you might be the first !

Easing him in after 16 months ?! Why not play Dossena seeing as he'll be playing in midweek...or is it too much to ask of him to play twice in 4 days ?

What happened if dossena played and got injured, who would you play as a back four against PSV?

He's only 19. We're not Middlesbrough, where throwing a promising young player in doesn't really matter. We have to get results every single match and we can't be playing Insua for any length of time unless the management are sure he can cope. He's clearly at that stage now, which is why he is involved in the first team squad a lot more this year.

And it's called rotation - which is entirely needed in this day and age.

"real question" because if Insua'd had a stinker and Warnock had had a good game - some plonker would have moaned about us not keeping him.

Insua has looked very capable every time he's played at first team level, and making that step up isn't easy.

I think if Aurelio was less injury prone he might not have bothered with Dossena and made Insua his understudy, but was probably worried about exposing the kid if Fabio was out for a long period of time.

I think Insua could be quality given the opportunities. Hope to see him feature a lot now with Aurelio injured, rotating with Dossena probably.
