Behind Enemy Lines Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 The wonderful PFA are getting their collective knickers in a twist because footballers are going to be subjected to the same anti-doping rules as athletes, cyclists, ect.Apparently they see it as an 'invasion of their privacy' to potentially get tested at home.Well tough s*** - scores of other sports people go through this & have done for years and very few of them are rewarded as handsomely as our over-pamper footballers. welcome to the real world
Behind Enemy Lines Posted November 11, 2008 Author Posted November 11, 2008 Rio must be crapping his pant.sThat's his bosses trick KYPCM
Swan Red Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 I wouldn't mind if they restricted it to performance enhancing drugs but am not sure why the recreationals should be reason for someone to be suspended
carrafan Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 I wouldn't mind if they restricted it to performance enhancing drugs but am not sure why the recreationals should be reason for someone to be suspended Arent recreational drugs illegal?
Swan Red Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Arent recreational drugs illegal? I don't see that that matters
Falconhoof Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Arent recreational drugs illegal? There are laws in place to deal with that (rightly or wrongly) so why have an extra enforcement regime for recreational drugs, specifically for footballers ?
BDB Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Well it matters in the image portrayed of sports stars. They are supposed to be role models for the youth of today, you know get a bentley and a wife with fake boobs. Cyclists have gotten suspended for cocaine etc.. Tom Boonen for one, missed the tdf this year. for the money the footballers make, I think they could suck it up for 10-15 years, and then do as much drugs as they liked when they are retired.
shaq Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Arent recreational drugs illegal?Yes, but the only cases where people are tested for recreational drugs are in jobs where it's use could affect your ability to perform your job - for example, airline pilots. I wouldn't take too kindly to my employer introducing mandatory drug testing for my office job. The purpose of drug testing in sport is to prevent cheating by the use of performance-enhancing drugs. I don't think anyone could argue that a joint would be performance enhancing.
BDB Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Do you get drug tested when you start a job? I know I've had to do it several times. although in California, they don't care about Pot. As it's decriminalised.
Stevie H Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I wouldn't mind if they restricted it to performance enhancing drugs but am not sure why the recreationals should be reason for someone to be suspendedagree. i imagine that the testing for performance enhancing would show up any recreationals too wouldn't it though? would then put the testers in a tight spot.
Swan Red Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 agree. i imagine that the testing for performance enhancing would show up any recreationals too wouldn't it though? would then put the testers in a tight spot. am sure it would but all they need to do is clearly define the tests reference and report only on specific failures from their proscribed list
Murphman Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Footballers have a responsibility as role models for youngsters, them getting nicked for taking coke makes a mockery of what their parents and schools are telling the kids. Footballers are cheating the fans and their employers if they take any substance which affects their performance adversely (including excess alcohol) Recreational drugs are illegal, if they show up in a test that should be dealt with. FFS all they have to do is not take drugs, when they're 35 year old multi millionaires they can do what they like, I can't see the argument personally.
Stevie H Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 am sure it would but all they need to do is clearly define the tests reference and report only on specific failures from their proscribed listby the law of averages it must go on already. there must be drug testing staff out there who know all sorts about certain footballers who are bound by confidentiality agreements. i refuse to believe that there isn't a decent percentage of pro players taking drugs socially.

Swan Red Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 (edited) Kids treating footballers as role models need to be brought up better. The footballers responsibility is to ensure that they are in condition to give the club their best whenever they play. They are not paid to be role models nor should they be. If a player has a joint or whatever with no ompact on their ability to perform for the club it is hardly anyones business but theirs. Should we drug test all public sector employees on the basis that their having a line or joint is cheating the tax payer Edited November 13, 2008 by Swan Red
Cobs Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Kids treating footballers as role models need to be brough up better Liverpool players weren't heroes of yours when you were a nipper?
Swan Red Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Liverpool players weren't heroes of yours when you were a nipper? there's a huge difference between heroes and role models
Cobs Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 there's a huge difference between heroes and role models to an 8 year old ?
Swan Red Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Yeah I think so. And regardless if the results of any drug testing if the sanctions are only restricted to those substances that are perfomance enhancing then no one gets to know your favourite footballer is smoking a joint or whatever
Cobs Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I can see the Daily Mail's headlines now.......
Des Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I don't see that that matters Tbf the same would happen in any walk of life. If I had a blood test here, I'd get my P45 on a silver platter.
matty Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I'd get my P45 on a silver platter. Very posh, your workplace. I'd get mine in a manila envelope.
Murphman Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Like it or not footballers are role models. Every kid on the park wants to be a Steven Gerrard or a Theo Walcott and the way they conduct themselves sends out a powerful message. As I said, Rio takes coke, then it's cool and Dad is just an old fart. There's plenty other jobs drugs could affect your performance and impact on workmates too. For those 'invasion of privacy' takes second place behind 'impact on others'. How would you like to be treated roadside by a paramedic was off his nut the night before?
