Another great display from Alonso. Has carried on from where he left off in the final third of last season and is a big part of why we are sitting top of the league. Probably the form centre-mid in the league right now.

Rafa has dodged a massive bullet there.

Stunning start to the season from Xabi.

Absolutely class. He's running the show in most games.

I still think a lot of it is down to his new stubble.

Good grief.

barry did nothing wrong. i would have liked them both here.

alonso is playing now like he did in his first few years...to be fair to rafa he didn't play this well at all last year.

Had we signed Barry then I can't see how Riera could have joined us.

At the time I thought Barry would be good signing for us. But if someone at the start of the season offered me a three point league lead after 9 games having beat both ManU and Chelsea without Barry and yet another half-unknown new Spanish signing playing left wing for us proving to be a massive success, then I would have taken it

Barry is a top class player. I'd love to have him at Liverpool.

Alonso is now back playing somewhere near his best. Which is very nice indeed but says nothing about Gareth Barry.

Sometimes, I wonder why people start such threads.

Spot on.

If we added Barry to the squad in the future it'd still be a great signing.

Win/Win for us.

If we go in for Barry again the price will be a lot cheaper in Jan with 18 months left on his contract and next summer even less, no where near the ridiculous £18m we almost paid.

If Rafa insists on selling Xabi then his price will have skyrocketed, much more than the pittance £12m we were offered. Not that i want him to leave mind you. My only worry is the relationship between him and Rafa and signing a new contract but im sure that will all be sorted out if he keeps playing the way he is.

Having both Barry and Alonso on the books was never a realistic proposition. Whilst Barry is a fine player, Alonso is a better one. Too many were quick to wish him out the door this summer.

Agree

If Lucas hasn't improved this season, and Barry hasn't signed a new contract, than maybe we can sell Lucas to an italian/ spanish team and buy Barry

Some people are incapable of analysing a player for his own strengths and weaknesses - it always has to be relative.

Seconded.

He's been class thus far and is showing immaculate professionalism after the way he was treated by Rafa - the question is, will he still want to continue or will he seek to leave during the next transfer window or at the end of the season? NB I admit I wanted Barry over Alonso but fair play to the lad he's proved his critics wrong so far and is almost back to where he was in his first season

Yes, spot on. Alonso has been brilliant but Riera is making a big big difference to our shape, we wouldn't have bought both in and Barry doesn't offer what Albert does. We look so well balanced now, it's great.

This thread is far from bizarre.

If you want bizarre, go back and read the Alonso threads from the summer and reflect on the various 'expert' rationales for getting Xabi out and brining Barry in. How good Xabi is has nothing to do with Barry's merits. But plenty on here were only too delighted to spin it that way up to recently, when it's all gone quiet as Alonso has presumably satisfied those who thought he 'had it all to prove'.

Laughable then and even more laughable now because those of you who wanted "proof" that he was good enough to stay at Liverpool have it.

:applause:

I bet you though that if Xabi has a poor game against Portsmouth, the posts about his "inconsistancy", "unability to deal with english football", "unable to play quick passing game".....etc will start coming back again

I still wish we will buy Barry and stick him at LB. He will be an instant improvement in that position.

If we need to improve on that position in the summer (and i still think Dossena/ Insua and Aurellio are good enough there) than we should spend the money on a left back, rather than a midfielder who hasn't played as a left back for 10 years!
