Ronnie Whelan Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 According to Patrick Vieira: Offal. Patrick Vieira claims old adversary Steven Gerrard has blossomed into the best midfielder in world football. The pair famously did battle in the 2001 FA Cup final, after which Gerrard admitted he came out second best. Seven years on, however, Vieira believes there isn't a midfielder on the planet who could boss Liverpool's number eight. The Inter Milan star said: "The best midfielder I would say is Steven Gerrard. I really rate him as a player and as a man. I think he is still one of the best. "Cesc Fabregas has the potential to be the best. I think he is learning every year. Now he is a top quality player. He is one of the best. In the years to come he can be at the top."
5InIstanbul Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Aye, Gerrard admitted that then wandered away kissing his WINNERS medal laughing his c**k off.
Chili Palmer Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 I always liked Viera, that dive against us was brilliant, Didi missed him by about 2 foot and he still thought he would chance it... great player at his peak as well.
Swipe Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 He was awesome at his best. Him and Petit were something else together. He's right of course. Stevie is the best.
Falconhoof Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 I had to switch the car radio off this morning or i'd have crashed the car. 5 live were having a debate titled 'should Gerrard be dropped for England' 1st call was some very far back beaut claiming that Lampard was by far the superior player, Gerrard massively overated and that he couldn't understand why we keep having the debate. That was probably a high point for the level of debate among Chelsea and England fans who bothered to turn up.

It's been everywhere. Just read a piece by Matt Dickonson at the Times debating his position in the team. Every report i've read has revelled in the perceived 'fact' that Lampard was far better than him on Saturday. As bizarre a debate as you can have.
Sion Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 It's been everywhere. Just read a piece by Matt Dickonson at the Times debating his position in the team. Every report i've read has revelled in the perceived 'fact' that Lampard was far better than him on Saturday. As bizarre a debate as you can have. The times had Lampard rated as 8, Gerrard 5. Even when SSN brought up statistics that the England team has been far more successful in pretty much every aspect when playing Gerrard instead of Lampard, the debate still continues. Although for all I care Gerrard could never play another int game again.
John am Rhein Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Vieira was the best player in the League for a while
Chili Palmer Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Although for all I care Gerrard could never play another int game again. yep, goes for all Liverpool players as far as I'm concerned. Selfish I know but no interest whatso ever in international football, it only gets in the way of the real stuff.
Dominus Maximus Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Oh oh oh oh ohWe've got the best midfielder n' the world...
Alonso Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 The thing that singles him out as the best CM is that he is all but the complete footballer. He can do everything that you'd want a CM to do and to such a high standard as well. There isn't anyone in world football that you could compare him to which makes him unique. Is there even anyone coming through anywhere in the world that could take on the mantal as "the next Gerrard"?
Earl Hafler Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 I had to switch the car radio off this morning or i'd have crashed the car. Gerrard can do everything Lampard can do but better.Lampard can't do everything that Gerrard can. Ergo, Gerrard has to sacrifice some of his game to allow Lampard to do his David Platt impression and consequently people are always going to look at Gerrard playing for England and not see the same player they do in a Liverpool shirt. Ballack plays better without Lampard in the side.
Ronnie Whelan Posted October 14, 2008 Author Posted October 14, 2008 Simply because there is more room on the pitch when Lampard is not on it.
Scapegoat Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Gerrards biggest flaw is that he simply has too much to his game.
Archangel Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Gerrards biggest flaw is that he simply has too much to his game. He's admitted to his biggest flaw, he takes on too much, trys to run everything, I think thats fair comment Lampard's not half as talented but when he's on form he's been more effective for England and he was on Saturday and its not just a question of position Rooney's a bit like Gerrard as well, trys to get everywhere on the pitch, but he doesn't get any media stick whatsoever because, as we all know, the boy walks on water
Cliff M Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 yep, goes for all Liverpool players as far as I'm concerned. Selfish I know but no interest whatso ever in international football, it only gets in the way of the real stuff. Up here in the NE (of England), they are constantly surprised by my "club before country" belief. I'm surprised that they're surprised.

usualsuspect Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Rooney's a bit like Gerrard as well, trys to get everywhere on the pitch, but he doesn't get any media stick whatsoever because, as we all know, the boy walks on waterNot sure about that mate - Shrek has been shedded by the bedia all season until 2-3 weeks ago. Rightly so too.I agree about SG and FF debate.
Spoone Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 It wasn't this time round but i think during the last internationals but i heard someone on the radio say that Gerrard only has the same reputation as Lampard because of the goals he scores. I think he got the names the wrong way round.
Jarg Armani Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Shrek has been shedded by the bedia code?
D.Boon Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 The only part of Lampards game that is stronger is he gives the ball away less and retains possession better than Gerrard. That is partly down to the fact that he generally tries less adventurous passes than Gerrard though.
charlie clown Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Shrek has been shedded by the bedia all season until 2-3 weeks ago. you got a blocked nose?
DanielS Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Gerrard covers when Lampards goes forward. Lampard does not cover for Gerrard. So Gerrard stays deep because Lampard is incapable of tactical discipline. Gerrard has to play longer, less accurate passes from deep and so loses possession more and so does not look as accomplished. Its blatantly obvious what is going on and it is why Capello wont get rid of Gerrard.
