Cauley1 Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 UEFA has announced that Atlético Madrid have to close their ground, the Vicente Calderón Stadium for the next three Champions League matches. It comes after what UEFA considers to be the serious incidents seen in the ground before the game against Olympique de Marseille. The next three Champions League matches will have to be played at least 300 kms away from Madrid. It’s understood that Atlético Madrid are to appeal the sentence Madrid
Guest Ant Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 What the hell? What about people who have booked hotels and paid for flights?!
Ronnie Whelan Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 (edited) 300km is hardly a disincentive. *edit* In light of Ants post I should clarify. Hardly a disincentive to those Athletico fans who want to cause trouble. *edit* Edited October 14, 2008 by Ronnie Whelan
David Hodgson Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 What the hell? What about people who have booked hotels and paid for flights?! Yeah. Like me. WTF.
Will Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 That better fecking get appealed against successfully! They can't change it so close to the game - it's ridiculous
muleskinner Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Its UEFA, they don't care, especially about Liverpool.

Woodsyla Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 I appreciate this will inconvenience those who have booked travel but from an LFC perspective this is great news. Our toughest CL match is to be played in a 'neutral' venue. Cracking.

Philby Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Here are the most likely spots it will be moved to imho Valencia - 301 km (No game at the Mestalla that week & I'm sure they'd appreciate a few quid)Bilbao - 319 km Murcia - 351 km Sevilla - 391 km Málaga - 417 km Barcelona - 498 km La Coruña - 508 km Palma (Majorca) - 550 km
Woodsyla Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Nonsense, it's a rubbish. It's like Liverpool having to play a home Champions League game at the Millenium stadium. It will be nowhere near as intimidating, the players wont get lifted by the crowd in the same way. It's better for the team.

Cracking. i have paid £200 for a flight in that day, and a flight home at 6:20amIf they move it this will be money down the drain Excuse me if i don't think this is f***ing 'great news'We are going to qualify anyway Edited October 14, 2008 by johngibo YPC

We can lose home and away to these and we'll still go through comfortably. And maybe people actually want to go and see and play against Atletico on their own ground? You're clueless, again.
smithdown Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 They are the biggest feckin whoppers going.
Cauley1 Posted October 14, 2008 Author Posted October 14, 2008 They have 3 days to appeal. Assuming they do and its unsuccessful, it doesn't really give our fans much time to rearrange travel plans. Think this ban will come in after our trip to the Vicente Calderón.
sean Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Outrageous, do they ever stop for a second and think of the consequences of their misdirected power?
muleskinner Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Intimidating atmospheres can raise the game of the away side as well as the home side, we haven't got a bad record away from home in Europe really have we? Torres will be gutted if this is moved also. Big games in noisy aggresive stadiums are a huge part of football and a win over there will be fantastic for the side. Bad news if its moved IMO, not least for those who have forked out on travel.

johngibo YPC Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Outrageous, do they ever stop for a second and think of the consequences of their misdirected power? If some of our fans can't think about that, why should UEFA?
Woodsyla Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Intimidating atmospheres can raise the game of the away side as well as the home side They can, but concede an early goal with a passionate crowd and it can be a long way back. It's no coincidence that in general Turkish sides are a f***** to play in Turkey and are f***ing appaling outside of Turkey. It's intimidating to the opposition. I'd rather play any away CL game in a neutral venue.
