... to spend in the mid-season window, what realistic changes could we make to the squad to drive us towards the League Title???

 

Where do we need cover? Who could we get in that might allow us to improve the first team?? Without going all 'Faustino', what eould you do?

 

Right Back?

A backup forward or 'No. 10?'

 

 

I'd sell the usual suspects (Pennant, Benni perhaps) and make a cheeky bid for Glen Johnson myself - Decent player going forward and a good fullback with potential to be better - Leave Arbeloa as cover for CB/RB...

I don't think we need either of them unless Skrtel is out for the season.

 

RB Arbeloa Degen

CB Carra Agger Sami Skrtel (when fit)

 

No problem in either position. Degen may be made of glass like Aurelio but Arbeloa is great at the moment and Degen will get fit long enough to cover him if required. I'm actually happy with the squad and don't see the need to sign any players if Gerrard is to play some games at CM and we have no further serious injuries between now and then.

I'm still disappointed we didn't get him, haven't given up on the idea, think he could be the difference.

 

i don't want another RB for £6,7,8m who isn't good enough and/or turns out to be made of petals and clouds.

 

you get what you pay for, and decent players, esp fullbacks cost a bomb.

lets assume the worst for Skrtel and that's his season over. We'll defo be in for a CB and the Echo have already linked us to that Brasilian lad, Aislan.

We only really have 1 fit RB that Rafa is prepared to play in the first team. Without wanting to come over all SOS but my hopes for Degen are not high and Rafa obviously does not think Darby is ready.

I'd sell Pennant and get a proper RM. If Kuyt is injured (is that even possible?) i don't want to see Gerrard or Benny play there.

It would be interesting to have a Riera-type player on right wing as well though.

I see Babel as a LM, or even a striker.

 

The pattern of our games this season is that we're sound defensively and control possession but have had trouble breaking down teams in the final third. If we were to buy someone in January i'd want someone that offers something in attack. A Riera type player on the right would be excellent, preferably someone versatile.

You reckon Degen isn't good enough for the first team ? He's an international footballer. He has fitness problems but so does Aurelio. I'm quite happy with Fabio and Doss, likewise I'm happy with Alvaro and Degen.

 

Obviously IF Skrtel's season is over then we need to buy a CB in January but if he will be back by Feb/March then isn't that overstocking the larder a bit ? People are already moaning about Dagger not getting a game and there is Sami as well. We have 3 CBs currently that I'd be happy with in any game, I'd rather not have to have an extended run with Sami but I think we are ok with what we have.

Why do you think Rafa doesn't think Darby is ready? He has so far only shown that he would rather play Degen than Darby (in one game) - hardly condemning Darby out of hand

not even been on the bench for any of our games (including Carling Cup) despite us only having one fit RB (and he started the season poorly) and 7 subs allowed.

That would make me think Rafa does not think he is ready yet.

I didn't say he's not good enough but my hopes aren't high, hoping to be proven wrong. How long is he out for?

We were looking at Aislan before the Skrtel injury. Probably a Sami replacement but we are looking at centre backs.

I reckon Sami is gone in the summer, I think he felt Rafa hoodwinked him into staying and is pissed off he is not in the CL squad. I wont disagree that we are looking at CB's but I don't think we will bring in someone in January unless either Sami goes or Skrtel is out for the season.

 

Re Degen he is a right sided Aurelio at the moment, if when have Dossena and Arbeloa as well I don't see it as a problem. I see Rafa as having an excellent balance of squad at the moment. Depth in all positions. Lets say Arbeloa does get injured and Degen is still out then we could play Carra there for a few games with Sami and Dagger in the middle.
