Will Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Why do we sing this song? Where does it come from, historically speaking? I keep meeaning to ask this question after having sung it at every match for goodness knows how long, and I've always wondered where it came from Wikipedia fairly unhelpfully say: Hearts FC Version -Said Bertie Mee to Bill Shankly have you heard of the North Bank Highbury, Shanks said NO I Don't Think so but I've heard of the Gorgie AggroHis name is in a song of Partick Thistle due to the fact that he played for Thistle during the war. The song goes - "Said Bertie Mee to Bill Shankly have you ever heard of the Northbank Highbury. Shanks says no I don't think so, but I've heard of the Firhill Shed Boys The Burnley version of the same song goes "Bertie Mee said to Bill Shankly have you heard of the North Bank, Highbury? Shanks said no I don't think so but I've heard of the Longside, Burnley" The Liverpool version goes - "Bertie Mee said to Bill Shankly have you ever heard of the Northbank Highbury. Shanks says no I don't think so, but I've heard of the Annie Road agro! Nah nah nah etc! The original is the Millwall version which actually rhymes. It goes "Bertie Mee said to Bill Shankly have you heard of the North Bank, Highbury? Shanks said no I don't think so but I've heard of the Millwall Cold Blow" ..after Cold Blow Lane in London where the Den(Millwall's old ground)was situated
Jarg Armani Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 (edited) surely after all those times of being asked by bertie, shanks would have read up a bit about the north bank highbury. whatever bertie's follow up question was going to be we'll never know, but i think it was a trifle rude of bill to just tell him all the other stands he'd heard of. edit: hope this helps. AntM Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 partick thistle need to work hard at their rhyming
charlie clown Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 it works better in a west-Glasgae accent.
Christine Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Why don’t you listen to me? Its about the visit to the co-op !!!
sutty Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Huh? I assume the reason you don't listen to her is because when you do, she starts jabbering on about the f***ing co op
RP Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 well i know the mancs sing the same song except they change Bill Shankly to Matt Busby...so now i suppose we got an argument on our hands as to whose song it is? im saying its ours i tell ya Why would mancs sing about Matt Busby referring Bertie Mee to "Annie Road agro"? Mankes no sense that. But then again, your record on words to footy songs isn;t that great.
