The British media and Liverpool

Made me think the other day about the whole approach the English press take to Liverpool.

 

This isn't another moaning article - it's just an attempt to take into account and get my head around the way the British press approaches the game.

 

Stevie Gerrard is on 99 goals. He's at home. He's an established England International. He takes a free kick that everyone (Except the 'special people' at TheRightScore) in the world thinks is a goal and Liverpool eventually come away with a disappointing draw.

 

Forget Liverpool in the equation for a moment.

 

Can you really imagine that if an England 'Hero' of yesteryear - or indeed certain 'England Heroes' of today - on 99 goals - at home - if denied their 100th would basically be overlooked?

 

Given the jingo-istic nature of the British media in general and given the way they approach things - the fact that this wasn't a major talking point is actually fairly astonishing.

 

I'm just trying to imagine Wayne Rooney (For instance) in front of the 'faithful' at Old Trafford banging a goal in - only for it to be disallowed for a b******s decision. I'd imagine that Ferguson would be up in arms, crying to all and sundry. Most of the papers would probably produce flags in their papers to be waved in the games and the swell of anger and dismay would maybe enough to rock the FA enough to take action..

 

Or maybe not. But I'm sure there would be more uproar than the whimper on this historic milestone for (yet another) s*** decision in the crucial part of the season (Again, just for a change)

 

How do you think things would have gone if had been any other player than one from Liverpool?

Part of it could be due to the fact that we were playing Stoke at home and our bad result on the day overshadowed a crap refereeing decision. Had it been in a decisive moment against a top team I'm sure it would have been mentioned a lot more.

As has been said, not only did Thatcher have a teensy bit to do with all that, but the feeling that scouisers are 'underrepresented' from a centralist point of view goes a lot further back than that.
