Philby Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Why Liverpool won't win the league? Team Quality - They don't currently have the best set of players (Depending on opinion it's probably fair to say that they have the 3rd or 4th best) Funding - They don't have the largest amount of funding available for players (Their budget is dwarfed by Chelsea & City) Youth Setup - Although Benitez has implemented wholesale changes to the youth & scouting structure it takes time for the benefits to accrue (although successes in the Youth Cup & Reserve League are proof that progress is being made). His rivals at both United & Arsenal in particular have had a far greater time to put the desired structures in place & reap the rewards Stadium/Ticket Revenue - Although the crowd's intensity at Anfield is an advantage over their rivals they take in considerably less in tickets revenues than the majority of clubs in the top 4 Merchandising - Their merchandising policy doesn't come close to taking advantage of their worldwide fan-base, this is frankly a disgrace and, over and above anything else, is the reason that Rick Parry should be out of a job Environmental Stability - The infighting among the Owners (and also between them), Chief Executive, Manager & Fans is hardly a solid base from which to push on together & achieve something You can criticise Benitez all you want (and some of the criticisms are valid, some are not) but the way the club is currently set-up is simply not conducive to getting the better of the likes of Manyoo, Arsenal & Chelsea across 38 games in the league.
Hassony Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 disagree with your points, I think we have a spine that are as good as chelsea/ united
charlie clown Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Merchandsiing - always the decisive factor in the run-in to the end of the season.

Red Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Another happy post, maybe we should beat Everton 6-0 this weekend and we can all go back to being miserable All your points relate back to funding, which is the only thing which has held us back and forced Rafa' into buying his second or third choices, for example, and even then we still have a strong enough squad to put up a serious challenge, if not win the thing.
Stevie H Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 main conclusions you can draw from that are that we are behind both in terms of time and money invested.
honourablegeorge Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 disagree with your points, I think we have a spine that are as good as chelsea/ united But the rest of our team isn't as good. Hence, not as good.
downunder Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Merchandising - Their merchandising policy doesn't come close to taking advantage of their worldwide fan-base, this is frankly a disgrace and, over and above anything else, is the reason that Rick Parry should be out of a job The fact ADIDAS, Ian Ayre and another 3rd party (I think Sportal) oversee our merchadise it must be Parry's fault, along with everything else
Hassony Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 But the rest of our team isn't as good. Hence, not as good. I don't think the difference is massive
Tobes Rafa Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Why Liverpool won't win the league? I pretty much don't agree with a word of this, sorry. While some of the points you make may be accurate, most of them hardly affect the performances of the team on the pitch. The only one which could be relevant is the first one and in my opinion your argument falls flat at the first hurdle. United won the league last season and in my opinion they don't have as strong a pool of players as Chelsea. Their first eleven and in particular Ronaldo may well measure up against Chelsea but in my opinion their squad does not. (Fletcher, OShea, Park)
Guest Snorky Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 I used to think that it's because of Rafa that we wont win the league, but it's goes deeper than that. We cannot compete with the likes of United, Chelsea and now ruddy Man City off the park. We can match the likes of United, Arsenal and Chelsea in one-off games on the park, but over the season we just dont have the resources to compete. It doesn't matter who we have in charge, the outcome will still be the same. So I'm taking a step back from wanting him gone to just accepting things as they are. I'll still criticise him when he does something I don't agree with (like Robbie Keane coming on against Crewe with 3 mins left - why?), but I just might as well buckle up and enjoy the ride at times.
John am Rhein Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 You can criticise Benitez all you want (and some of the criticisms are valid, some are not) but the way the club is currently set-up is simply not conducive to getting the better of the likes of Manyoo, Arsenal & Chelsea across 38 games in the league. It's difficult but not impossible. But the implication in what so many people post - that a Liverpool manager should be given 4/5 years to win the League and then get sacked for 'failing' is an utter nonsense and if it's acted upon it'll be massively to the detriment of the clubs chances of ever winning the League.
Cunny Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 disagree with your points, I think we have a spine that are as good as chelsea/ united spines don't win championshipssquads with a depth of talent beyond the spine doI don't think we have that squad, as demonstrated by the squad players' performance against Crewe.

Cunny Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 didn't unites's squad players lose at home to coventry last season, they still went on to win the european cup and league title fair pointbut their squad is still stronger than ours, despite the fact that the spines are of comparable quality.
smithdown Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Does all that apply to the European Cup too?
Hassony Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Does all that apply to the European Cup too? /Andygray/ "anyone can win a cup /Andygray/
honourablegeorge Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 I don't think the difference is massive Maybe not, but our squad isn't as good,. simple as. And you agree, despite initially claiming otherwise.

Swipe Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Who wrote that?If it was you, who do you support? Interesting use of words "they" and "their" when referencing Liverpool FC...
matty Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 We can win the league this season. Stay free of injuries, a bit of luck, right attitude. We were only 11 points off winning it last season. When you look at a few of the stupid results we had....
honourablegeorge Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Take Ronaldo out of united and our spine/ team/ squad will be much better I'd disagree, but regardless it changes nothing, their squad is better.
yellow jumper Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 agree with a lot of the first post, if not the title. don't think it's impossible for us to win the league this season, but it will be up there with some of the greatest achievements in the history of this football club if we do. maybe the greatest.

Very good post, inparticular the first line as that sums it up in a few short words. Nothing wrong with the second paragraph either.
