The poor lad is a walking tragedy surrounded by the worst hangers on. He was a very fine footballer and rather thick otherwise - someone should have been watching his back properly.

I think there's more to it than that, at the very least it looks like he's got a severe personality disorder.

absolutely tragic it is, he clearly has severe problems and while he doesn't maybe want help, or know that he needs help, he should be getting it. where's the PFA, the FA, tony bloody adams etc? the game got enough money and exposure from 'gazza' so they should be helping him now.

agree completely, if he was physically ill I suspect their reaction would be greater.

 

His treatement by the media is also a reflection of it's inherent snobbery. He's a working class northener who likes a drink and is therefore automatically considered 'a bit mad'. The likes of Danny Baker and Chris Evans (a long time ago I know) have contributed to his current state.

the game used him up and spat him out, and he just needs serious help. he needs sectioning since he appears to be a danger to himself and probably to others. contrast the treatment of him with that of paul merson, who was backed by his club and the FA at the time. it's really sad.

I'd like to be more sympathetic towards his plight but then I remember again how he broke the jaw of a girl I know, just for politely knocking him back.

 

He's got quite a mean streak, you know chaps. It might just be that anyone who could have helped him has f*cked him off, although I agree he could have had a different life altogether if he hadn't moved down to that London in the first place.

He's been diagnosed bipolar, is an alcoholic, a gambling addict and has OCD

He has been sectioned before IIRC. However, this doesn't guarantee he's going to get the long-term help he desperately needs. You can't force people to undertake treatment for mental health problems unless he committed a serious crime, or went completely psychotic.

 

The streets are littered with people with mental disorders, and not getting treatment. He either needs to submit himself to the NHS for treatment, or have people around him who can help him.

 

Rather than Chris Evans or Danny Baker, it's the likes of five bellies and the other hangers on who must take most of the blame.

Was about ten years ago all this. It was in a club in London, there were other people around with him who took him off after he'd give her a dig. She didn't even know who he was. Somehow, can't remember how exactly, she got a phone call later off someone asking if she was going to the papers and offering her money to say nothing. This girl was pretty well off herself and told them to eff off.

Its a real shame. His book was a good read, fulll of honesty about his problems and not hiding from some uncomfortable truths.

 

As someone who has struggled with alcoholism myself I could relate a lot towards him and his feelings towards drink.

 

It also gave a lot of hope that he was going to be ok, which of course he isn't.

 

At his height one of the best footballers I have ever been priviledged to watch
