Stevie yesterday...

there is no argument.

i heard some bell on here complaining that he gave the ball away when he came on. that would have been when arbeloa gave him a f***ing hospital pass. he was great and just what we needed to ensure we continued to press and keep them back for the last 20 minutes.

Carragher was captain yesterday.

Not sure what you mean.

He did well when he came on and I was glad for him that he was on the pitch when the winner was scored and when the whistle went.

No problem with Gerrard being club captain as he's earned the right through sheer quality of performance and passion, but if were giving out plaudits for leadership on the basis of yesterday then I'd look to Carra.

Yeah I know Carragher was captain yesterday.. Has nothing to do with how Stevie went about his job as club captain. In fact, him coming on and leaving Carra as captain adds to to what I was saying..

Right ok, just wasn't sure what point you were trying to make from the first post really.

I'd actually agree with what you said about Carra keeping the armband - I think there is a time when Gerrard would have taken it when he came on but he did just slot in without any fuss.

Stevies our captain and will be for as long as he is here, I'm happy enough with that. He goes about it in his own way, I personally would like to see him being more vocal but all in all I think he is doing a top job.

I can't see what he did yesterday tho that would have made you say he is doing a stand out job or even think it worthy of a mention? we were on top before he came on and continued to be on top after.

i think that and the Babel sub changed the game again...we battered them from 5 minutes until 65 mins....then we tired.....then the subs put us on the front foot...i think it won us the game

well done rafa

Agree. Babel and Stevie added a further thrust when they came on.

there is a propper bell behind me in the kop. he was whinging at the boro game saying that he never was and never should be a captain. i couldnt beleive the c***. ok, he may not go screaming at referees, or get sent off every match for t***ting the opposition, but the guy leads by example.

look as far back as istanbul, and look as recently as boro. the guy is legend. when he is on the pitch, the other players are more confident.

i thought exactly the same just before they came on. especially in the second half, the c**** couldnt get out of their own area. but just before our two subs came on, they started to push us back a bit. then rafa makes the subs, and we go on and win. :)

Thought he was pretty average when he came on to be honest.

Ball retention isn't one of his strong points unfortunately, but then again he does offer a lot of other stuff to more than compensate.

I think I would have left him on the bench - there were a few things he did which looked 'strange' - he seemed to be not trying to overstretch himself - one instance that stood out was when the ball was coming down in the area - while he was under pressure. The 'natural' thing to do looked like swinging his leg at it - and hoofing it away from danger, but he seemed to hesitate, then headed it out instead.

I'm not convinced he's 100% - and if so, I think really he shouldn't have played at all.

I think Carra is a better captain - and I always prefer defenders to be captains because they can see what's going on in front of them.

Gerrard, for the most part, is captain in name only - it's usually Carra that gees everyone up and kicks them up the a*** if they need it.

Gerrard isnt the captain in name only, he does it in his own way and Carra doesnt need to have the armband

West Hamp cup final....Olympiakos...Istanbul, Boro at home

he is the Roy of the Rovers player, thats why he is the skipper

Proper captain. Look at the match again and look at how he composed himself yesterday.. That argument is done.

Anderson clearly had Gerrard in his pocket again ;p

  Im sorry I just can't keep a straight face on that... Captain fantastic is at least 3 levels above this pretender and always was.

I just thought there was something about him yesterday.. I saw him chatting with Dossena on the bench. Little things like that. Maybe I am looking too much into it. If we are going to be successful this year he will, as he always does, play a huge part in it. On and off the pitch.

The players responded well to going a goal down early and built and built as the game went on but you do have to give Rafa a lot of credit for the win yesterday alright. He made the subs that really did end utd. We didn't need to risk Torres which is always good too.

Agreed. I think he played it perfectly, even though the game didn't go the way he expected. He was right to hold Torres and Gerrard, and even Babel, back.

I think, ideally, he thought we'd keep it tight and match them, with a view to winning the game in the last quarter of the match.

I worry, slightly, for Babel's development if he's going to be continually seen as a real threat from the bench. against tiring defenders, rather than a 'first 11' man. He's inadvertently making a Davey Fairclough sized rod for his own back, is Ryan.

Maybe Ryan should play a bit better when he starts?

Anderson is one of the most over rated player in europe

haven't seen anything yet from him yet (for united and Brazil) that tells me he was worth the £19m

What exactly is Anderson? Is he a holding defensive midfielder? A central midfielder? A wide man? An attacker? He doesn't seem to be anything at all. I'm not even sure what footed he is.*

*Mainly because I can't remember him touching the ball yesterday.

He used to play attacking midfield for Porto and did really well in the season they played in the Champions League. Hasn't ripped any trees apart for Manchester United but he's still only 20. He's actually a quite a decent player and maybe this shows that some of us need to get some perspective about Lucas and how tough it is for even top class youngsters to make immediate impacts in the premier league?
