Steve Finnan & City

Rcick Parry said this in his column this week:

"I recall that he very nearly went on loan to Manchester City in 2004. We changed our minds on transfer deadline day and that decision would lead to Steve stepping up his Anfield claims and then winning a Champions League medal in Istanbul."

I don't remember that at the time - was it ever publicised? I wonder if that was in the summer, or January?

First i've heard of it though when Rafa arrived there was a lot of talk of him going to the blueshyte after the mighty Josemi was signed. Thank god that didnt happen

was it not Spurs, I remember he very nearly signed for them at the end of the transfer window when Rafa first arrived, luckily by then Rafa realised that Josemi was only good for end of season pictures.

I think ES mentioned a while ago that Rafa was desperate to ship out Finnan that summer to finance a move for Joey Barton.

I wonder if that comment by Parry was subtle dig at Rafa

what, the fact that he turned a player most seeemd to think had been s**** for us into one of the most consistent members of the squad?

No but maybe he was suggesting Rafa's initial view of the player turned out to be very wrong.

It just seemed strange that he should mention this now.

When Finnan has left? Surely Parry would not mention this while the guy was still with us, although you can never tell with Parry.

Or he may be saying that a player the club thought was s***, so much so that they could only interest a then midtable (or lower) club like City in him, turned to be one of our better players after Rafa worked with him.

You can look at the statement either way.

Truth is, it's no big deal, and I don't see the point of making it so.

Rafa wanted rid did he not. It's common knowledge. At least it was at the time as I remember everyone talking about it and how weird it was to get rid of such a player.

He had a very average first season under GH and there weren't many who thought he was the answer long term

I remember it very differently. He was a prize when we got him and like all players deserved a bit of time to fit it especially being voted the best RB in the league the year before.

I love the way you follow me around Hassony : ) You keep my big moans in check : )))

That wasn't a dig mate it was the truth. Rafa wanted him out. That's what happened. You think it's personal. It's not . I think Rafa is a very good coach.
