Keita Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 I love this guy and am really made up we have signed him and I think he will be a quality signing but I cant see the benefits of playing him on the left like he was today at times. Can anyone tell me what he can add in this position?
cocknose Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Only person who could begin to explain is Rafa, the man makes a simple game too complicated, trying to fit cars in to hosepipes
Falconhoof Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 For the money we've spent we've ended up with a functional unit.

JonShar Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Keane has played on the left for years with Spurs. But hey, let's blame Rafa!
madaboutlfc Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Keane has played on the left for years with Spurs. But hey, let's blame Rafa!and was shi t there according to spurs fans.. we didnt need keane.. we needed wingers.. our formation at the end of last season was great and we have f***ed it up.. i think we may end up going back to it as this new one makes rafa look clueless

(Whom Liverpool fans deemed not good enough)Rafa shipped out Kewell. (Whom Liverpool fans deemed not good enough)Rafa shipped out Gonzalez. (Whom Liverpool fans deemed not good enough) And is getting s*** because his next solution isn't working. Those of you who don't see that Rafa KNOWS it isn't working are idiots, quite simply. A left winger is on the way, let's see how he does.

Rimbeux Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 I thought he was more effective there than through the middle, looking for traffic and flick ons myself. I thought we kept the ball better on the whole.
JonShar Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 we had babel and aurelio on the bench. And Aurelio came on. If he'd have started with Aurelio and had Keane on the bench he would have been classed as "defensive". Fair point about Babel - I would have brought him on instead of Benayoun myself. But I'm sure there were factors that contributed to the decision - Babel's fitness/carrying a knock, felt like we'd have more success through the middle, etc. I totally agree that we lack any real width on both flanks. But I think Rafa knows this as well as we do, and is searching for answers.

Keita Posted August 31, 2008 Author Posted August 31, 2008 Am I only the only person who has so far has seen no gain in selling Riise?
Mike Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 not yet... its early days with dossena though. he's not been pulling up trees defensively though.

Because they're not running down the wings creating space and an outlet cause none of them are real wingers.
The Invisible Man Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 not yet... its early days with dossena though. he's not been pulling up trees defensively though. What annoys me is we has Aurelio, Insua, Arbeloa and even Carragher who could cover left back. But we've been sorely lacking a winger of any sort for ages yet the left back is sorted before pre season kicks off whilst it takes until the last day of the transfer window to sort Riera.I think Dossena will be decent but I wish we had our prioties sorted

MFletcher Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Hang on, hang on. Are people complaining about us buying a left back now? I thought the common view was that we had been average in the four wide slots for ages? Then when Rafa tries to address the problem, the player is written off after five games and we still have a problem at left back, so much so we might as well have kept John "I have no right foot" Riise for the last year of his contract. This place is a joke sometimes.
Cobs Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 despite the ridiculous levels of hounding of Riise on here our defence has been sound with him in it for years it's our wide attacking players that have been the major problem paying £19m for Keane and playing him wide left isn't and never will be the answer thought Dossena played OK today - fwiw

I just can't understand why he's being written off as 'average' already. Four games, and apparently he's definitely not the long-term solution at left back.

Hopefully in the next couple of months he'll justify the transfer fee
