floyd the barber Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 gotta be happy of course.. We have been pretty dreadful the first 2 games....yet have got a solid 6 points...so you have to be happy. Definetly alot of work to be done....Gerrard himself didnt seem at the races today, yet gets us the winning goal...isnt that what hes all about.. anyway fantastic result....lets hope the team focuses on a poor performance.. Alonso for example had a shocking game today.... there were some good signs that the torres - keane partnership could be something to saviour..especially first half
CaptainXabi Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 I can't decide whether it's good or not. Delighted with the 6 points though.
Florist Cinema Pond Goal Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Keep winning and the confidence will inspire performances.

Bo Benn Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 It will be good, if we improve. These two results will be drowned out by 1 and 0 pointers later on unless we really get going. Having said that I thought we actually were better than Boro for much of the game and the Torres/Keane partnership worked better today than what I've seen before.

Do you think we practice set-pieces in training or let the players go home early ? Passing is poor, too many longballs. With Lucas and Masch returning, hopefully we'll see a return to 4-2-3-1
stressederic Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 We all wanted to be in a good position in the league when we got Mascherano, Babel and Lucas back from the Olympics. That's what has happened. Get them all back in and up to speed, get back to the 4231 formation and kick on.
Sion Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 I don't think we were that bad todaywe missed Mascherano massivelyI think we struggled from getting frustrated at not scoring after a bright startneed to stop worrying if we've not scored by 30 minutes.Although, another game, another showing that proves our 'wide' (i use that word very loosely) are not good enough. If Rafa thinks he can persist without playing at least one winger, then we won't come anywhere near winning the league.I'd take anyone now, even Downing, who impressed me today
Zoob Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 (edited) I'm thrilled because I have confidence that we'll get a lot better. Mascherano will be back, Babel will remember to play take part in the game when he's on the pitch, Gerrard (who clearly isn't match fit) will get better. I don't think were were nearly as bad today as we were last week, but clearly we're still some way from our best. But to play that way and have 6 out of 6 points, it's a good start. Edit: And we won't have Mike Riley, or refs as bad as him every week. Really bad performance from him. He seemed to Give Boro a free kick every time they fouled one of our players, and doesn't know what a hand-ball is.... Edited August 23, 2008 by Zoob
psl Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 (edited) Can't complain with 6 points. Are going to need to step it up for the next couple of games though. Edited August 23, 2008 by psl
floyd the barber Posted August 23, 2008 Author Posted August 23, 2008 regarding the ref...he had a hand in both goals really firstly, excellent job for him to play advantage before the carra goal..he was ready to blow after a foul on kuyt i believe...then saw carra had the ball and let play continue.. also 2nd goal...well he added that vital extra minute when the boro player went down injured........alot of refs seem to forget that and play to whatever shows on the board.. so...i have to give riley some credit.

Guest Funke Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 (edited) Great start, just a shame the performances have been so lacklustre. Can't wait to get Masch and Lucas back, put Gerrard back to where he was last season and get Babel starting some games. Don't think i'll ever be convinced Robbie Keane was worth £20m or that he'll solve any of our problems from last season though. Edited August 23, 2008 by Funke

Guest Funke Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Riley certainly did redeem himself, was royally getting on my t*** during the match, blew the whistle so many times on Torres for seemingly nothing while we were hoofing it to him.
Crazy Horse Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Every season we seem to grind out a result like this. And we hope that it's a sign that we've turned into a side that can win games ugly when we're out of form. Then we find out that ugly is our form. Is this the season things will change?
elmer dinkley Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Play s**** and win - it's the sign of champions. Play s**** and lose - sack the manager.

Some of the performances in pre-season seem to point towards the former. But we've seen enough over the years to know not to expect or predict anything don't we...

Sign of champions after two games!!!!!? It was the same on here last season, do ye ever learn? Edited August 23, 2008 by GrandpaSimpson

Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 I'll be more worried if we're still playing like this in Nov. Woeful performance, but it's the result that counts

Cooger Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 It's a very good start - 6 points, 100% and that is all we should care about really. Yes we have some problems, but we're picking up maximum points, unlike Man U and possibly Arsenal if they lose today. Once Mascherano comes back, Keane settles more and Gerrard gets fitter we'll improve.
