Benitez Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 when you have one of the elite forwards in the game One chance one goal. Gotta admit I wasn't feeling confident going into this game, and wasn't feeling more confident at half time. But 2nd half - far more controlled, but it was still going to take a moment of magic to win it. And if that is what it takes in these games, so be it, with Torres it's possible! Can't wait till Mascher is back though.
Cam Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 We're behind Bolton in the league The elite striker thing is bang on though. 18 months ago that match would have finished 0-0 or maybe with a late defeat. How many times have we said "the Mancs & Chelsea always grind out 1-0 wins when they're not playing well"? That's 'cos they have match-winners. It was always going to be a tough opener. And I was less than positive when I saw Rafa had been tinkering. But maybe today he called it right and played a couple of squad players in a 'lesser' match.
lfc003 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 reminded me of Middlesboro away 2 or 3 years ago when we drew 0-0 before Nando scored
Florist Cinema Pond Goal Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 reminded me of Middlesboro away 2 or 3 years ago last year when we drew 0-0 were losing before Nando scored

Barnesy_10 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 ????the mans in love.... as are all of us... allow him to believe this love has gone on for longer.
Chili Palmer Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 the mans in love.... as are all of us... allow him to believe this love has gone on for longer. Ok then... I remember when Torres smashed in that winner at Old Trafford 5 years ago...
San Diego Red Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 If anyone this 'grinding out' of results is positive for us, you are severely mistaken. We were poor for a majority of the match. The long ball crap needs to be sorted out.

The long ball crap needs to be sorted out. play badly, win. last year we played badly and didnt win too often. i'd have taken that before the game started. its 3 points from 3, cant ask for any more than that.
Kvarme Ate My Food Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 it's like in '77, when it looked like Borussia Mönchengladbach might grab a winner, but then Heighway swung in a corner and Torres headed it home

Molby Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 we looked pedestrain for most of the first halfSunderland offered virtually no meaningful threat after the first half hour When Xabi came on our tempo increased dramatically and we began to pull them aroundThey were so deep that most of our moves ended up with a shot outside the area but even so, we should have done better. Our shooting was awful apart from the goal I like it when we learn and improve within a game but so often we've done that and ended up not getting that late winner, like the Mancs would have done; if today is the start of better things in that respect then great
Big Red Machine Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Missing Masch a lot. Think today and on wednesday he'd have made a massive difference. If we can grind out results untl we get him and Babel back I'll be happy enough.

drdooom Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 It's like in 1944 when Europe was under the iron boot of nazism but then Torres landed at Normandy and things turned out well. He would probably have had 2 if Keane hadn't run in front of him. If that's all he does in a game like this that's fine. Not a great performance but 3 points is 3 points.
Archangel Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 how is grinding out a win not positive? At this stage of the season any win is a good win, players are still a bit rusty, new players come in and have to gel, but if we are still lethargic and dysfunctional in a few weeks time then thats going to be a bit more concerning. As an isolated result the poor performance can be overlooked, the three points are the thing to build upon
Nebraska Red Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 where was Torres in 1066 when the Normans invaded England? sell him, he's just not reliable. never there when we really needed him.
Hieronymus Bosch Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 how is grinding out a win not positive?Grinding out a win ispositive - but only in moderation. We find ourselves having to grind out a win too often. It'd be nice to have half-a-dozen quality displays in between. Let's hope that, with a win behind us and the Olympians soon returning, we can string a few performances together and get the confidence levels up.
Andy @ Allerton Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Great win. Brilliant 3 points. We could have had 4 or 5 goals. And were denied a blatent penalty. And still came away with a win. Anyone moaning about getting 3 points on the first day of the season seriously needs their bumps feeling.
lfc4eva99 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 1947 - Torres finally won India its freedom. Mahatma Torres.

Playing well and getting f all has been a hallmark for near on 20 years, confidence comes from results and results are what it's all about. If we battle into the last 10 every game knowing we can and will nick a goal, we will go very far. That mental edge is more important than our ability to play decent stuff, which should be a given anyway considering the players we have to put on the park. Edited August 16, 2008 by Rimbeux
