Swagger Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Really has his work cut out. By all accounts Dosenna looks a great prospect (Capello and his staff raving about him), and Insua will hopefully be pushing hard for a place in the first team squad. I really like Aurelio. Maybe has to do with the fact that when fit he kept Riise out of the team, but nonetheless I think he is a very good footballer. His body has let him down too often, but do you think he could do a job on the left wing as well as at left back, or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

I thought he had a good spell at the end of last season and our play improved with him in the team. But you can't build on him because you just know he will get injured.
Benitez Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Aurelio's a handy player to have, because he can play left mid and left back, and is a good footballer, very comfortable, good free kick on him, and isn't one footed and prone to hoof-ball But we knew when he came here about his injury problems - and I can't see that ever changing. Rafa knew that, but thought enough of him as a professional and as a player to think it worthwhile having him here, and it is. And I pressume he realises too that his injury problems is something that means he'll never be a 'first choice', but rather a player who can come into the team when needed and fit in easily. So I don't see it as him 'having his work cut out', more of a case of him keeping fit as much as he can, so that he's available! He'll end up playing plenty of games, be it as a sub or starting some, if he does.
Guest Snorky Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 I can see this being his last season if he gets either a long injury or more niggly ones that force him to miss games.
Gunga Din Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 i could see him being on his way before the start if we get an offer.
Rimbeux Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 i could see him being on his way before the start if we get an offer. Agree, I think he's very dispensable
Gunga Din Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Agree, I think he's very dispensable all he will do is block Insuas progression. we dont need 3 left backs, so either i think Aurelio will go, or Insua will get a loan deal
Guest Snorky Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 all he will do is block Insuas progression. we dont need 3 left backs, so either i think Aurelio will go, or Insua will get a loan deal I think the club want to develop Insua themselves.
Gunga Din Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 I think the club want to develop Insua themselves. then he needs first team exposure. Will he get that with two players ahead of him? i doubt it.
Earl Hafler Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 And all Aurelio's presence does is give Rafa more selection problems than necessary - you know he's going to give Aurelio games to help keep him happy.

hideNseek Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Considering he's one of our best passers of the ball and can play in a couple of positions it would be madness getting shut of him.
Guest Snorky Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Considering he's one of our best passers of the ball and can play in a couple of positions it would be madness getting shut of him. That maybe so, but like previous great passers of the ball etc (Berger and Redders), he will never gaurentee you a full season.
MFletcher Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 With Dossena first choice, we can use Aurelio sparingly to protect him from picking up niggly muscle injuries whilst selecting Insua's games carefully to ensure he gains exposure without finding himself thrown into the deep end. As it stands, Aurelio is one of the better left backs in the league when fit and the fee we would receive for him would not be sufficient to justify a sale. I wouldn't want to rely on Insua entirely as a back up in the event that Dossena suffered a long term injury.
floyd the barber Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 personally feel that Aurelio isnt as good as some are making out to be...the times i saw him last season...he was slow, weak in the tackle and seemed to struggle overall with his game.. His free kicks, yes they look nice but lack the sort of power to test any semi-decent keeper...(i dont believe he has scored from one yet)....he has scored one nice goal from open play.. sorry just dont rate him.
Whitey Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 He's a good ball player, but the fact he's made of glass has been the issue. I guess this is why we've gone out and paid relatively big bucks for a LB for Dossena. However, although he looked lightweight the first season, at the end of last season with a few games I thought he looked much more solid, and even pacey at times....We got him for free (I think?) so worth keeping as Insua develops - but as with others can't see him being around for the long haul.

Hassony Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 is he? strange that he didn't give crouch enough games last season to keep him happy, but "we know" that he is willing to do that to fabio
RedTillImDead Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 I like Fabio as a squad player, he is a good passer and can play a couple of positions, he has two useful feet and can deliver from wide positions as well as from free kicks. He has also been with the squad for long enough to come into the 1st team and deliver the goods straight away. When he gets consistent games he is a very effective player, if he could have an injury free season(unlikely)he could be our best option at LB. His form before he did the achilles injury(i think) a while back was excellent unfortunately he has not returned to that level since but we all know he has it in him with abit of luck he could recapture that form and shine on the left of midfield or at LB.
cymrococh Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 I think if we see him, it will more likely be at left mid.
floyd the barber Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 (edited) --------------reina------------degen--agger--skrtel-dossena-------------masch----------------kuyt----gerrard--barry---------------keane----------------------------torres------------ im not so sure we are going to play with wingers consistently, judging by Rafs coments about liking both our new full backs as attacking and being able to get quality crosses into the box... I think ideally(and yes all managers have a prefered first 11)...his plan is something like the above(of course we know he wants barry and keane, 2 sure to be first choice players), and lets not forget if Rafa does play agger and skrtel at the back, we shall be pused a good 20 yards forward from what we saw last season Edited July 14, 2008 by Lets get Masched
MFletcher Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 I'm excited to see an Agger/Skrtel partnership - I think it could be something special.
Cunny Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/7528298.stm little thing about Aurelio in Tim Vickery's column this week Do you rate Fabio Aurelio? And do you know why he has never been called up to the Brazilian national team (especially considering the dearth of quality left-backs available to Brazil)? I watched him play last season for Liverpool and I thought he was absolutely terrific. I feel he embodies confidence when he is on the ball and knows exactly where his passes are going plus he isn't a bad tackler and has a pretty good free-kick.Chris Kelesoglou I rate him very highly - I think he’s probably the most complete left-back Brazil have produced over the last few years. He was one of their few success stories in the 2000 Olympics and looked set for a good international career, pushing Roberto Carlos hard before eventually replacing him. He has been called up for the senior squad, only to have to drop out through injury. Unfortunately the injuries have been a recurring problem, otherwise I am sure he would have achieved even more than he has with Valencia and Liverpool.
