Flasher Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 It will be different for Torres next season. No doubt about it. Defenders will be wiser. On the plus side, the kid is so keen, strong and damned talented, he looks like he'll always do well. Last season he squared defenders up then went left and scored with his right foot. Very unusual for a right footer. If defenders send him inside instead, they are screwed even more, since he's in a stronger scoring position. This will also ensure he copes well next season I think. But, what would help enourmously, would be to have someone else up in the front line that also scares the s*** out of defenders. The best way to ensure Torres has an even better 2nd season is to make sure he's got space. This, i feel, is best achieved by giving the opponents another headache to worry about. The need for signing a player in the Villa or Arshavin mould is crucial, on many levels. However, what stands out for me it the need to get the best out of what we've already got, namely Torres and Gerrard. Like I say, best achieved by not allowing the opposition the time to get comfortable with our forward line which relies heavily on two players currently. Not entirely, but heavily. Big season for Babel. He could be the distraction we heed. Kuyt back to his normal state of mind following his fathers death and recent good form the Euro's will also help. One more wizard would be perfect though. Sign Merlin
honourablegeorge Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 (edited) Torres won't have a difficult second season in the Premiership. The Premiership will have a difficult second season with Torres. Edited June 25, 2008 by honourablegeorge
matlfc Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Dont think he will have any problems cos if you look at the variety of his goals he is a class act. Defenders will know him better but you could say the same other way round. We defo need more class signings tho as its scary to think where we might have finished in the prem without him.
D.Boon Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Problem i have with this is that after say 15 games everyone knew what Torres game was all about yet they still could not stop him in the second half of the season.

Rich Gobey Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Problem i have with this is that after say 15 games everyone knew what Torres game was all about yet they still could not stop him in the second half of the season. Couldn't the same be said for all players?
Hassony Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Couldn't the same be said for all players? Kuyt started brightly, but than defenders realised his weaknesses (pace) and played him better, so he had to reinvent him self I don't think there are any obvious weaknesses in Torres's games
CaptainXabi Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Kuyt started brightly, but than defenders realised his weaknesses (pace) and played him better, so he had to reinvent him self I don't think there are any obvious weaknesses in Torres's gamesThere isn't a standard Fernando Torres goal, which makes it hard to stop him in the long term. Someone might come up with an idea that works for a game or two, but I can't see them stopping him long term as long as Gerrard is around. The best chance is to stop his supply, which is possible but becoming more difficult as we add better attacking players.
muleskinner Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Van Nistlerooy didn't have a difficult 2nd season and Torres is a better player than he is.
sean Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Torres doesn't particularly control games, therefore impossible to negate. Once he gets ball in space he'll continue to be quality.
Rory Fitzgerald Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Its been alluded to before, if you have a deficiency in your game, defenders can wise up and limit your impact. However, if the player in question is pure quality then only the likes of Ferdinand and Carvalho have a chance of stopping him whilst the rest of the defenders with the average teams such Jagielka Ryan Nelson, Richard Dunne etc will always struggle

Swipe Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Don't think he'll struggle. Too strong, clever and quick. For the majority of the defenders in the league, that's just too much to cope with. The plus side of teams worrying about him more, is the space it'll leave for Gerrard, Babel and any other offensive players we bring in
Flasher Posted June 25, 2008 Author Posted June 25, 2008 Torres can indeed go both ways. I've no doubt he'll be as good. It will be tough, but i think he'll do it. I just think he could be even better with more quality around him, as he'll get even more space. The thought of Torres, Babel, Gerrard and Villa/Silva/Arshavin etc would scare this s*** out of any defence
Guest Kaizer Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Thats the thing though, he is capabable of going the other way, unlike someone like babel for example whi is much weaker on his left side I know, but if someone asked me if I could describe a classic Torres move/goal, I would tell them about one where he changes direction to his own left with a surge(?) to go past players with pace and then getting himself spave and time to take the shot, I`m not able to explain it as good in English as I would have been in Norwegian though, but I guess you understand what I`m talking about.
Bigal Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 I hope continues to beat defenders a la Marseille away, Tottenham away etc I think its ace

D.Boon Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Couldn't the same be said for all players? I believe some players have freakish seasons where a long patch of form and a large slice of luck combine to make them look top players. I don't think that the following season when they may not be as effective is particularly down to teams/managers working them out just that they are not good enough to sustain that level of performance consistently Torres is too good to be a one season wonder. He also has that commodity that i as a paid up member of the slow centre half society can identify with being terrified of..........pace, lots of it. Is what i think i am trying to say.........

I think he might be a touch better than Phillips, Stewart or Ricketts, potentially...
Gerrardrules Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Confidence will be the main factor whether he will have another season like last season. If he gets a couple at the start then he will be flying again. He surely has the skills to continue being a succes.
Kuyt-fever Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 He can play. However tiredness may be a factor, played a s***-load of football over the past 12 months which is something I do not believe he is used to. He may actually go through a period of not scoring for two or three games.
