Great post. Few observations.

1) How red was our kit. Positively glowed.

2) Dudek completely outpsyched them. His save from Pirlo was amazing.

3) What a penalty from Smicer. He was under amazing pressure as they had just came back from 2-0 to 2-2. If he had missed, it would have been advantage Milan.

4) By the start of next season, all the main penalty protagonists will be gone from the club: Hamann, Cissé, Riise, Smicer, Dudek.

5) Rafa looked about 15 years younger then.

I aways notice that when watching videos from the 04/05 season. Thinner, younger and less stressed.

Dudek was three yards off his line !!

Incredible when you look at those now how much Dudek got away with. Handing the ball to the players, moving around like some crazy space invader and being two or three yards of his line when he saved the pens.

Cisse's run-up resembled one of Devon Malcolm's.

Its amazing how there wasn't one complaint about what Dudek done that night, not from Milan anyway.

Has there ever been a penalty retaken in a shootout? I mean the linesmen were right there.

Dida should have done what Dudek did. He didn't pick up on it.

I thought Cisse took it pretty well. Didi was great too.

Why no Stevie or Xabi?

Wondered what he was doing in Warrington when he should have been in goal.

Yeah but you'd still expect atleast one person to complain - none of em said anything and even out of the neutrals, the only people who gave a s*** were mancs/bitters. The ITV commentators just brushed it off almost as if "yeah he was off his line - so f***ing what?" Just adds to highlight the surreal nature of the night I think. Just the mere fact that the tie had got that far seemed to be a shellshock to the Milan players. Kaka and Tommason were the only ones who looked like they had any life in them. Everything had been sucked from the Milan team by that point.

Agree about the red kit actually. Dunno if it were the lights, the cameras - whatever - it just seems to radiate red.

Stevie was set to the take the 5th pen and let's not forget Xabi actually missed (great save) his earlier in the game!

Two other things stood out for me with the pens .

a) Didi took his pen with a broken foot. Obviously not so bad that he couldn't carry on but he still played 15mins with a dodgy foot and took a pen. He runs towards Dudek after the Shevchenko pen like an old man

b) Rafa's first reaction apart from congratulating the people around him (pako etc.) on the bench was to go straight over to Ancelloti and the Milan camp to shake their hands. Class. Obviously all the reds in the stadium + players were going mental but Rafa just had this swagger as if to say "We'll see you again soon".

Can't remember all the who, what were now, but some details of it all stick in the mind from what we heard afterward too.

Didi taking his even with a broken foot (he apparently knew it was broken but said nothing until afterward - the sight of him 'skipping' - hop - ow- hop - ow - toward Dudek after we won...Luis being told by Rafa he couldn't take one unless it went beyond the original 5...Smicer telling Cisse 'That Goalkeeper is stupid - he always goes to his right, go to his left and you score' (they both did), then after scoring, Vladi turning to the fans and holding up the badge and kissing it, even though he knew he had kicked his last ball for Liverpool....Dudek saying to Shevchenko 'So Andrey - same side as usual? You'll have to do better to beat me!'...Carra bodyswerving Dudek in the celebrations before flukily finding his Dad in the crowd.

Lots of other stuff commented on at the time I can't remember at the mo - amazing night/morning. Oddly though, the sight that will always stay with me was that of a Liverpool fan and his mate consoling a distraught Milan fan outside the ground after we won, and that fans mates saying 'Grazi' over and over to them. I thought that one of the classiest things I'd ever seen in football.

It was said at the time that Rafa picked the 3 subs (Cisse, Smicer, Didi) and the two fittest, Riise and Stevie to take them due to them being fresher. Stevie would of taken the 5th.

Never heard that before, that's brilliant,

Regarding Vladi, lol at his comment to Cisse. I was never one of his biggest fans, but after his performance in the final I only have fond memories of him. His brilliantly taken goal was the one that really got us back in the match, his penalty was so cooly taken and inch perfect, and his celebration afterwards showed how much love he had for the club.

That night was pure magic. I am sure that we will continue to have many great nights as Liverpool fans, but I doubt there will be another night like it.

I think the penalites highlighted on thing though... that team may not have had the most ability in the world but it had a lot of f***ing bottle!!

Look at how half the Chelsea team didn;t fancy taking a penalty (resulting in Terry feeling obliged to step up) and in the Old Trafford evidently both sides had trouble getting 5 people willing to take a penalty.

Compare that with Liverpool in 2005:

Hamann, Cisse, Riise and Smicer took one. That's 4 players.

Gerrard was number 5, and Alonso had already taken one, so that's 6 players willing to take a penalty in a European Cup final.

We know the others must have volunteered as Garcia was desperate to take one, but didn't, so that makes 7 players.

Carragher has taken penalties in a League Cup final and the World Cup, so would surely have been willing, but as mentioned above Rafa went with those who were fittest and Carra had severe cramp... so it's safe to say Carra would be willing to make it 8 players.

An Hyypia took the 2nd penalty in an FA Cup final shootout, so again I'm assuming he'd have been willing to take one if needed.

So out of the 10 outfield players left on the field, the only one who either a) Didn't volunteer (beg in Garcia's case) or b) Take a penalty in another major shootout/final is Djimi Traore... and who knows... maybe he fancied it ;)

But seriously... I think you'd be hard pushed to find a team with so many people willing to step forward under pressure to take a huge penalty.

And as a club, I think we have won 11 out of 12 penalty shoot outs. Absoluletly Germanic.

Dudek doesn't say anything to him, just hands him the ball
